Here's a recap of the agenda, resources and highlights from the call:
Agenda
National Updates
Presentation: Partnership Not Servitude: Prioritizing All Humans and the Direct Effect it has on Pets
Speakers: James Evans, Founder and CEO, Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity Marilou Chanrasmi, CARE Center Chief: Northern Tier https://careawo.org/leadership/
- "Listening is the oldest and perhaps the most powerful tool of healing. It is often through the quality of our listening and not the wisdom of our words that we are able to effect the most profound changes in the people around us. When we listen, we offer with our attention an opportunity for wholeness. Our listening creates sanctuary for the homeless parts within the other person. That which has been denied, unloved, devalued by themselves and others. That which is hidden." ~Rachel Naomi Remen
- CARE held The Gathering earlier this month in Philadelphia where proximate leaders shared their genius. You can access the recording here https://careawo.ticketleap.com/the-gathering-re-mastered-live-stream-/
Highlights from the Chat
- "This reminds me of community-based participatory research: https://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents/evaluate/evaluation/intervention-research/main" - Jamie DeLeeuw
- "In simplest terms, community-based participatory research (for convenience, we'll primarily call it CBPR for the rest of this section) enlists those who are most affected by a community issue – typically in collaboration or partnership with others who have research skills – to conduct research on and analyze that issue, with the goal of devising strategies to resolve it."
- "I'm so glad this topic is being talked about. Thank you, James and Marilou!" - Diane Williams
- "Often, funding opportunities that exist to help BIPOC businesses/communities don't directly help, rather, they create opportunities to provide "technical assistance" from others instead of understanding the need" - Shannon Roebuck
- "I hope the BIPOC leaders will answer the national and state conference calls for presenters at future conferences -- maybe that process needs to be evaluated?" - Nancy McKenney
- "Which is why we have taken our events to the people and our local parks. It has helped us connect to those who need our services the most." - Ashley Rodriguez
- "I appreciate the point about deep listening instead of judging. What I hear when I listen is exactly what James is saying: they need more opportunity, less prejudice, more support, more education, more transportation." - Betsy Ballenger

We hope you will join us on Monday, October 31st at 11am PT/2pm ET for our next Community Conversations call.
@James Evans and @Marilou Chanrasmi from Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CAREawo.org) will discuss the origins of animal welfare and how we got here with the problems that persist today. Together, we will look at the need to include people of color as part of the solution, including how it has historically been done and new ways to partner with communities who may distrust us. The topics discussed in this talk will consist of the history of animal welfare, prioritizing BIPOC people, and the value of this very inclusion to help save more lives.
