  • 1.  Consistent diet

    Hello,

    I have been reviewing other past posts regarding food programs, these seem restrictive and/or inconsistent. We are hoping to start our animals on a consistent diet and have started a budget to be able to do this. We are hoping to find a middle of the road food that we can purchase at cost. Is anyone currently doing this that would have any advice or resources?

    We have been using the Hills program for 20 years and have been very happy with it. I'm not sure what you mean by restrictive. I think with any program the company will be looking for a partnership that is mutually beneficial.

    When reading about the Hills program it says that you have to feed that food exclusively.  This would be difficult for us, we us RC for our underage kittens and prescription diets like RC GI.  We have many animals that go on hunger strikes and, in those times, we offer a variety of food options to hopefully find something they like. Do you run into any of this?

    When we feed a prescription food, we do use the SD version. I'm not aware of any RC diets that don't have a SD equivalent. My experience is that Hills wants what's best for the animals. If an animal is not eating any of the SD products or they don't have an equivalent product, you could feed something else.

    Purina isn't donated food. It's discounted food. Unfortunately, for a small, rural rescue that is run by only volunteers and local donations; even at almost 50% off, that's not feasible for us on a continuous basis.

    We use Purina at my current place.  The last place we used Royal Canine.  You can use other food for a specific reason but overall stick with your food.  The Purina one has been good as the staff also get a discount even on things like Calming Care for our own pets.
