Hagrid's Hope Cat Rescue is in desperate need of help. The 3 people who run the rescue are all seriously ill and we need to find placement for at least some of the cats and kittens in our care.
It's a lot of personal info, but I hope it will help you to understand - 1 was admitted to ICU last night with sepsis and may lose his arm, 1 was told yesterday she needs heart surgery, and the other is scheduled for transplant surgery next week. The rest of our small group of volunteers are struggling to provide the needed care for the cats at the shelter, but we can't continue like this. I'm worried about the wellbeing of the volunteers and especially the cats. We have about 25 kittens, and about 60 cats.
Is there any way to reach out to other shelters/rescues and ask for help?
Or do you know of the appropriate place for me to contact to get help?
If some other rescues could at least take some of the kittens, we could try to manage with fewer cats.
I also should explain that neither the city we are in (Portage, Indiana), nor the county shelter will respond to calls about stray cats. They will only help dogs. Portage Animal Control will only answer calls about cats if the cats are severely sick or injured and need to be taken directly to the vet to be euthanized. The City of Portage pays into the county shelter fund, but only enough for them to accept dogs, not cats.
When word got out that there was a cat shelter in the city, Hagrid's Hope was swamped with calls. So, what was meant to be a small rescue has become a nightmare. We've met with the mayor and city council about their "no help for cats" policy, but they are not interested in changing it.
The people who run the rescue are too kind-hearted to say no to callers, but now they are in over their heads.
Is there any advice you can give?
