  • 1.  Do you do TNR, or Targeted TNR?

    Posted 05-16-2023 06:20 AM

What is your approach to TNR? Do you do it ad-hoc/as requested? Have you had any luck with a more targeted approach?

We’ve found that the volume of spay/neuter alone is rarely enough by itself to keep consistently reducing a community's free-roaming cat population over time. But rather, identifying areas of high need (meaning, lots of cats) and then focusing TNR resources at that location yields optimal results.

Join CCP and Neighborhood Cats for a conversation on Targeted TNR this Satruday, May 20 from 2 - 4 p.m. Learn more about targeting, why it's so important and how you can do it no matter how large or small your program currently is.

This is a free webinar. Feel free to share with your volunteers and networks!

We do both. We prioritize Targeted TNR but when have time, also take other requests. Our HQHVSN clinic requires the caregiver/feeder to call and make the appointments. Sometimes while trying to expand outward from a larger colony, it can be difficult to get new caregivers on board with calling the clinic. When the caregivers are a couple blocks away, this can make it more challenging to practice targeted TNR. Other obstacles are when you have an undocumented population or folks who are hesitant to call an agency and leave contact info, mental issues, folks who want to stay under the radar, or folks where s/n isn't a priority.

That being said, when we get a call for one house and see other cats on the block, the alley, behind the house, etc. we always do outreach and try to get as many of those fixed. Our largest site so far is a mobile home community of retirees where we have TNRd or rescued 160+ cats/kittens. We do try to fan out from the original location and get it all done.
