  • 1.  Do you use anxiety-reducing medication or medication alternatives in your shelter?

    Hi everyone, 

    I am a PhD student studying the treatment of fearful cats and dogs in animal shelters, and I am hoping you can help me out! We are conducting a study investigating the use of anxiety-reducing medications and alternatives in shelters in Canada, the USA and Mexico. If you work or volunteer in a shelter, we would love to hear from you, regardless of if you prescribe medication or not.

    Hi Bailey,
    Ironically, I was literally just registering for this dog anxiety summit that is free for a few days when I saw your post.  Pet Summits was started, in part, by Dr. Ian Dunbar. When you register for free, there are lots of free resources about anxiety that you can download. I'm pretty sure the free offer only lasts, like, another 30 minutes. If you're interested you'll want to hurry! You can also get lifetime access if you pay.

    Anxiety meds are complicated since all pets react differently.  I do know that many shelters use Trazadone for dogs.  However, many veterinarians will confirm that it can actually make 50% of dogs MORE anxious.  For cats I have read a lot of positive posts about the adaptil plug-ins.
