  • 1.  Dog-Inclusive Housing: Why It Matters and How It Impacts Families Nationwide (Camp Maddie: Pet-Inclusive Housing)

    Posted 11-08-2024 04:27 PM

Dog inclusive housing has become quite the hot topic and we're so excited to spend half a day chatting about it next Wednesday at Camp Maddie: Pet-Inclusive Housing! I'll be giving a presentation on, Dog-Inclusive Housing: Why It Matters and How It Impacts Families Nationwide at 10am PT.

Dog-inclusive housing isn’t just about allowing pets—it’s about keeping families together and creating healthier, more compassionate communities. Across the country, many pet owners face tough choices due to housing restrictions, often having to give up their dogs. By embracing dog-inclusive policies, we can help families stay together and create neighborhoods where pets are valued as part of the family.

In this presentation I’ll share insights from over 13 years of advocating for dog inclusive rentals, showing how dog-inclusive housing improves both mental and physical health, lowers stress, and keeps pets out of shelters. We'll break down the real impact this has on families and communities nationwide, and discuss how everyone benefits when housing is accessible to all—pets included.

    In the meantime -

    What are you seeing locally?

Has your organization decided to make advocating for dog inclusive housing a priority?

Are there specific tools or resource that would be helpful in talking to policy makers that you haven't seen yet?

Do you know how the most recent election results might impact housing legislation locally?

    Hi Shannon,

Thanks for sharing this! Dog-inclusive housing is so important for keeping families together and building more compassionate communities. Locally, we're seeing interest in pet-friendly policies, but some property owners are still hesitant. Our organization is working to address these concerns by teaming up with housing advocates.

A resource with case studies showing how dog-friendly policies reduce turnover and boost satisfaction would be super helpful in talking with landlords and policy makers.

    Looking forward to your presentation!

    Best,

"I am wondering if the landlords and property owners are bound/limited by their own insurance policies? And even if inclusive insurance policies are available for landlords, are they cost prohibitive? Or are most landlords implementing restrictive policies regardless of how inclusive their insurance policy may be?" - Katherine Coleman

Emotional Support Animals or ESA's are a great resource for people that need them for various reasons.  One could argue, that we would all benefit from having an Emotional Support Animal and that many of our pets already are providing that emotional support, regardless of the specific designation. It's also key to remember that ESA's are not Service Animals and do not have the same protections or public access as a Service Animal.  And  just because an animal is an ESA does not eliminate the responsibility of owning a pet, either.

However, when it comes to rental pet policies and ESA's things can get a little more tricky dependent on the landlord.  Landlords are seeing an increase for reasonable accommodation requests for potential tenants that have an ESA. Locally, they have told us that these requests are costing them extra time and therefor money, which is stressful.

One could also argue, that if breed and size restrictions were removed, they would see less requests for reasonable accommodations.

If the question is - are folks faking needing an ESA to get around pet policies?  I would argue again, the answer is no because pets in general are providing a support regardless and getting an ESA letter & is a benefit to my well-being and is going to assist me in keeping my pet and keeping it out of your shelter or rescue, why not?

Below, you'll find highlights from the engaging discussions that took place during the live event, along with additional resources shared by attendees.

    Highlights from the Chat:

    • "There is some data showing that it's more cost effective to keep pets with their owners than the cost of care of intaking a pet into the shelter!  "What they found is that, on average, the per-animal shelter cost was $426 while only $116 per-animal to keep the pet in the home through their proactive outreachwork." - Lauren Loney

    • "WOOF. Let's hear it for the pibs." - Beth Miller

    • "This is awesome. I have a Rottweiler/Husky mix. She's perfect but it's difficult when I need to find a new place. I recently was denied housing earlier this year because of her breed mix." - Laura Skiles

    • "Even if you own your home, there can be Homeowner Association rules and limits on pets." - Shelly

    • "When I was leaving a DV relationship, I struggled a lot to find affordable housing that allowed my dog (Aussie/Beagle). I almost had to choose between giving up my dog or dropping out of college to work more hours to afford dog-friendly housing, since it comes at a higher cost in my area." - Maya Ibarra

    • "How much of rental policy restrictions are due to insurance restrictions vs. a landlord's own policies?" - Katherine Coleman

    • "I live in Omaha, Nebraska and my city practices breed ordinances, so having bully breeds within city limits comes with many restrictions and triple the annual fees of a non-bully breed." - Maya Ibarra

    • "I was literally told by a potential landlord 'you can come but your dog cannot'" - Laura Skiles

    • "We had to jump through hoops for our Great Pyrenees when we had to live in an apartment for a year. Interesting experience." - Beth Miller
