Animal welfare work can be profoundly rewarding, and it demands a lot from the people who do it. The intensity and emotional and physical stress impacts are real, and no one gets through it alone.
Please consider joining us on Tuesday, Dec 16, from 12 pm to 12:30 pm for this webinar, which focuses on caring for yourself and your colleagues. We will focus on clear, workable ways to effectively support yourself and others, without absorbing more than you can carry.
I'll be leading our conversation - Janet Hoy-Gerlach, PhD, LCSW, LISW-S, Director of Veterinary Social Work at Open Door Veterinary Collective. I have done street outreach, full time crisis response work, and worked with first responders of all sorts on well-being support and stress management and teach Mental Health First Aid certification for the National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA). I will walk us through:
-
the difference between seeking peer support and trauma dumping,
-
how to debrief tough moments with less impact on everyone involved, and
-
what active listening looks like when we're trying to stay steady.
We'll also talk about gently and directly setting boundaries in a way that protects the speaker and the supporter, and review several "tools" (things to do) when your body is going into or in full-blown fight/flight stress response but that's not what you need in a given situation (these are also great for grounding and basic nervous system reset).
If you want no-frills, research-based tools to help you support your colleagues and yourself, I hope you'll join us. If the date/time doesn't work for you, a recording of the session will be available for you afterward to review.
Earn continuing education credit from The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement towards 1.0 CAWA CEs. This webinar has also been pre-approved for 1.0 continuing education credits by the National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA). A day or so after the recording, you will get a link to Maddie's University where you can access a certificate of attendance.
Please feel free to share with anyone who may be interested!
