Question for veterinarians experienced with feral/community cats

I care for a feral cat colony and would really appreciate hearing from veterinarians who have experience treating truly feral cats.

When a feral cat has an illness that is potentially treatable, does the fact that the cat cannot easily be handled or medicated at home change your threshold for continuing treatment versus recommending euthanasia?

For example, if a socialized cat with the same medical findings could be sent home for daily medication, supportive care and monitoring, how would you approach the situation when the patient is feral and daily handling is difficult or impossible? Would you consider alternatives such as hospitalization, temporary confinement, longer-acting medications, or other ways of allowing treatment time to work?

I completely understand that repeated handling and confinement can themselves cause significant stress for a truly feral cat and that every medical situation is different. I'm not looking for a universal rule or asking anyone to criticize another veterinarian. I'm genuinely interested in how veterinarians who work with community cats balance those welfare considerations against giving a potentially treatable cat an opportunity to recover.

I would be very grateful for your personal experiences and perspectives. Thank you.
