Our rescue group is 12+ years old, but it is all-volunteer, home-based foster and tiny compared to many groups on here (~200 adoptions per year).  Is there a discussion group out there-or would anyone be interested in starting one-that specifically focuses on small organizations and their needs?

Many of our volunteers, including the president and board members, work full time in other jobs and do this in their off-hours as a labor of love. I find that often the topics on here are beyond our scope and capabilities, and yet we, too, could use a space to share ideas and discuss issues.

We are a small rescue all volunteers with full time day jobs like your rescue. Only difference is that we started two and a half years ago.

I'd be interested in a space for small groups too. We do 150+ kittens a year. Our rescue is also young - started by one woman who did it for 3 years, we did a year as an informal org and became a registered charity this year. So we have a lot of organisational challenges to address too.

I would also be very interested in a group specifically for small rescues. We started in May of this year and only have 9 official adoptions so far so we are a very new and tiny cat/kitten rescue. Our rescue is also primarily home and foster based, and run solely by volunteers.

We are also a smaller rescue in a small (57,000) community.  We are foster based and all volunteer as well.  Resources are very limited as there are 4 large rescues (plus a handful of individuals who "rescue") and 1 city shelter that all must vie for 😳 it would nice to share ideas on fundraising and operating.

We started our animal rescue in rural WA State in October 2021. We are 100% volunteer-powered mostly by retired individuals. We've partnered with other nonprofits to extend our reach into hard to reach communities. Partnering with other rescues has helped us carry out our goals. We rehome dogs with a focus on senior dogs and provide a sanctuary for senior horses.

    Hi
We are a very small rescue in a rural setting.  We have limited volunteers and many of them wear multiple hats within the organization.

We would be interested, but we will also stay in the general discussion, it has been a learning experience to interact with the larger groups.

Hi, I am also a small startup 501c3 ,  in  fact I'm the only one in town. It's the only program in town that does TNR for the Humane Society, even they don't have anyone that does TNR. Therefore I have to run the business paperwork and trap. I'm having a tough time of it with no volunteers and no help with the books, the accounts, a filing system and fundraising. I guess I had big dreams that  people wanted to help with this program but they are all just too busy. A lot of the articles in Maddies forum don't relate to me but I check when I can.

We are the only rescue in our large county but are in a very rural location. We run about 60-70 dogs, and 5-20 cats on any day. Staffing is limited, and we've only recently been able to get more volunteers to help consistently. I do the majority of the fundraising but my small, easy fundraisers have brought in very little. A holiday silent auction was successful last year but I did all of it myself and said I'd never do it again! I would also like to continue with the larger forum, but be able to communicate with smaller rescues.

Our rescue is also a small foster based all volunteer rescue in CT.  We are just coming up on our ten year anniversary.  We adopt from 200-250 mostly kittens out a year. I would also love to have a group of similar rescues to discuss issues with.  This year has been challenging for us. We have had very sick kittens and it has been very costly for us. We are continually trying to come up with new ideas to raise money.

Hi, Carol and everyone who has responded to this thread so far. Thank you for your suggestion of a separate forum group for smaller organizations. We hear you. In the past, we've found that smaller forum groups end up siloed and inactive. However, it appears that there is some interest and it may be worth another try. Our primary purpose in the forum is to give you the tools that you need and an easy, free, safe space to connect with each other.

There are currently 9 forum members on this thread who would like a separate group dedicated to smaller organizations. If we create another forum group, be assured that everyone would still be able to participate this main Animal Welfare Professionals community and would have access to the posts and library resources. We are considering your request and will let you know as soon as we've made a decision.

If there's anyone else out there from a small organization who would like to have a separate forum group dedicated to small organizations and their needs, please reply to this thread. We'd like to see how many forum members are interested before we create another group.

Even if a small subgroup is formed, I must stay connected with the larger group.  I have learned so much in the past few months, and I do not feel as isolated.

I appreciate the organization more than you can imagine.

I would be interested in participating in a group focused on small organizations, as well as staying connected with the large group. My organization is eight years old, all-volunteer,  and foster-home based. Our name includes the word refuge because we are narrowly focused on senior and special needs cats and have very few adoptions. That has its own challenges. We also support TNR, and this year are making an effort to do more in that area due to the increase in cats in need and the lack of local resources.

We are a small rescue and sanctuary in a very rural area of south Florida. We started in 2017 and have steadily grown but still considered to be a small organization. We have proudly been 100% volunteer run since the beginning. Like most of you all we have to work full time jobs in addition to running our sanctuary. Although we just won a local grant to pay someone to help a couple days a week (for a year) at the sanctuary, so we won't be able to say we are 100% volunteer. We differ in that we are not a cat/dog rescue we take in farm and exotic animals, most with medical issues or seniors. We do have adoptable pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs but our adoption numbers are much lower than a cat/dog rescue. I would be interested in a forum focusing on resources & support for small rescues/sanctuaries but would stay in the forum for large groups as well. There is so much we can learn from the larger groups.

    Hi Kim,

In recent years there has definitely been a sharp increase in small rescues popping up, especially during COVID.  So The Forum might be a good idea and can always be shut down if it's inactive but most likely it will need a moderator and rules?  I  would love one of those Monday talks to cover topics that is applicable to small rescues. Most of the time it seems to be geared toward large and mid sized organizations. While I greatly appreciate large organizations and learned so much from them it seems like small rescues are often forgotten and RARELY are ever mentioned however collectively as a whole, we play an important role as well, as small rescues pull from large organizations and fill in the gaps in rural areas that large and mid size organizations don't cover.

    Hi Heron,

Thanks for your thoughts. You are correct, if we create another forum group it will fall under our Community Guidelines. Our Maddie's Pet Forum team would moderate first posts by new members and posts marked as inappropriate by other members but wouldn't post regular content like we do in this main forum community. Content and activity would be up to the members of the group.

I have passed on your topic suggestion for the Monday Community Conversations to the Steering Committee. Not sure if you saw it but the Community Conversations call on 7/17/23 was "Rural Road: Lifesaving's Longest Mile". That call highlighted challenges facing rural or isolated organizations. I highly recommend watching the recording if you missed it.

    Hi everyone,

I already said that I'd love to join. I like to mention that my primary need is a group for rescues, large or small.

I see that as a rescue, we, most of the time, can't use the directions the shelters do.

For example, we usually don't have facilities and rely entirely on fosters.

We don't have a vet on the premises. For our rescue, that's a big issue that costs us a lot of money that we don't have.

I am asking for ideas, help, and discussions about the rescue challenges.

I'm so glad to know we're not alone. I used to volunteer at a shelter that had its own vet exam room and two volunteer veterinarians coming in twice a week. That was a privately owned no-kill shelter in the Chicago suburbs where almost no expense was spared and the animals had a home forever, even if they weren't very adoptable.. Now I live in a rural, less affluent part of Michigan and volunteer for this no-kill, home-based foster org, as I mentioned . A shelter building, while nice, isn't even a priority for us-what we desperately need is a low-cost local spay/neuter clinic, either mobile or otherwise! Millions of cats!

I like conversations regarding smaller programs like ours,  I works at TNR every day. The Humane Society doesn't have a TNR program, so I stepped up 3 years ago, I can't get volunteers either. I see a lot of organizations who have hundreds of volunteers and I feel like a failure. I need a volunteer coordinator to take that weight off. Does anyone known of a good announcement to put on a Facebook page that has worked for them? I'd love to hear of everyone's experiences in finding volunteers.

Yes, yes, yes! My organization, the Twin County Humane Society, is over 20 years old and serves 2 large rural counties and a city in SW Virginia. We still have a small core group, some of whom are retired, and some of whom still work regular jobs and we serve MANY needs in the community, including foster-based rescue, spay/neuter subsidies, owned-animal support (medical and food), TNR, and other duties as assigned. Groups like ours have unique needs and are in a whole different universe when it comes to resources.

    Thanks for suggesting this!

Count me in too if you start a small rescue group.  We're a rescue large in scope in that we're national,  but our yearly intake is on the small size mainly because of lack of foster homes and funding for expensive medical procedures like dentals which nearly every dog who comes into us needs.  Our dogs are also small...we're breed specific to Maltese and Maltese mixes -- but they run up very big vet bills with bad teeth and serious cardiac issues. We're 100% volunteer and all of our money goes to the dogs, Maddie's Pet Forum has been such a source of knowledge and inspiration to me as a National Coordinator but indeed us small rescues have some very particular needs and dilemmas.  The support of fellow like rescuers in problem solving. would be a great help.

We would also like to join.  We are rural and all of our kittens are fostered.  We divided off of a larger rescue to take care of all the kittens that come to them and that come to us.   They do the adults and we do the kittens.   If we have mom cats and they are weaned from kittens, the mom goes to them and we adopt out the kittens.  Would love to see post from other smaller groups.

I would definitely be interested in joining a group like that. Our rescue spun off of a larger multi species rescue because we felt the cats were under represented, despite being more than half of the revenue stream. We started with nothing in March and we are working hard to build name recognition, brand new recognition and return to the levels of adoption we had before we set out on our own. Prior to our split we were adopting out 500 kittens every year. This year we will be lucky if we hit 300. I think a space is needed for smaller, foster based, all volunteer  Organizations

Thanks to everyone who let us know you're interested in a sub-group for smaller organizations. There is clearly a desire so we have decided to set one up. A special thank you to @Carol Brendler for starting this thread and making the suggestion!

Before we do this, we need to do some work behind the scenes. We also want to get your input to make sure we create a group that meets your needs.  I'll post again soon with more details.  Thanks again!

Thank you to everyone for weighing in on this discussion thread and to @Carol Brendler for starting it! Per your request, we've created a new community/group within Maddie's Pet Forum to specifically address the challenges & needs of smaller organizations. 🎊

For those who commented on this discussion thread, you will receive an invitation to join the Small & Mighty Organizations community/group in Maddie's Pet Forum.

I've attached a video to explain how to accept the invitation you received to join the new community/group. For those who did not receive an invitation, you can join by going to the community/group here: https://maddies.fund/smallandmightyorganizations and clicking the teal "Join Community" button.

You'll then be prompted to select your notification settings for the group. Under the "Discussion Notifications" section, I recommend selecting the "Daily Digest" or "Real Time" email option.

Please keep in mind that if you select a Daily Digest, you'll receive that daily digest for the "Small & Mighty Organizations" group in addition to the Personalized Digest you receive for the Animal Welfare Professionals community. You can adjust your notification settings at any time by going to your profile -> My Account -> Community Notifications or click here: https://forum.maddiesfund.org/profile/myaccount/preferences?

We hope this smaller cohort will help you connect with similar organizations. If you have any questions, please let us know by replying to this comment or emailing us at forumhelp@maddiesfund.org
