I am wondering what is considered an acceptable amount of hours for a full-time employee working in Animal Welfare. I know this job can be brutal and demanding and compassion fatigue is real. So, what do other management teams consider full-time hours?

As a salaried employee, my salary technically only covers 40 hours of work each week. I try diligently to remain at that threshold simply because if I work over 40 hours, I don't get paid overtime, so I have to adjust my hours throughout the week to remain at 40 hours.

Full time is typically 40 hours a week.  Your state requirements, and benefit eligibility requirements may also dictate what "Full time" is.

I'm on the board of a shelter with several full-time employees. For us, it's 40 hours.  As you mentioned, the work can be emotionally taxing and I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a staff member working over 40 very often or very long for this reason, not because of the budget.  There's a lot more to compassion fatigue than hours, but they are a big factor.
