Small & Mighty Organizations

Let's share ideas for small organization fundraising events that take just a few people and can raise larger amounts of money.   My non-profit started this past January (four months ago) and there are just a handful of people involved which makes it super-difficult to raise significant amounts of funds.  We are fundraising and writing grant proposals every month --- while all holding separate full-time jobs.  :-)

We just did a great fund raiser with a local K9 Resort, pet hotel. They collected items for our pet pantry from their clients that bring their pets to their pet hotel.  They collected amazing items that we will distribute at our pet pantry.

Also, Ocean Job Lot, donated pet food to us as well for our pet Pantry.

Local restaurants also do fund raisers for us and give us 10% of the meal amounts for a specific day and collect in-kind donations as well. We have so many pets to care for in our county that this is helpful in keeping our pet pantry going!

Hi - we recently did a bowling fundraiser. We were able to rent 6 lanes for 4 hours at a local bowling alley and sold tickets for attendees. We collected donations for raffle baskets and did a small silent auction for two large prizes. Our attendees were really happy with the event, said it was fun for their families and pretty unique for an animal rescue to host. We raised quite a bit of funds while having fun with our community!

    Good morning and congratulations!

This may not be a quick and easy answer, but I think one important change to make when thinking about funding an organization is to switch from a mindset of fundraising to development.  We consider all of our events and fundraiser really as friend-raisers.  The real work happens behind the scenes, cultivating those folks into regular donors and growing their commitment to your organization over time.  I read something that really stuck with me: for every donation, reach out to that donor 3 times.  First, the thank you.  An email generated by your CRM is great, but there is nothing like a hand written note, too.  Then maybe an update on the animal they helped.  Then perhaps a newsletter.  Then the next ask.  For larger donors, personal relationships are important.  A call, a check in, remembering their pets, etc can all go a long way to cement a relationship.

I know this all takes a ton of time and is so easy to say, as a retired person!  So baby steps as you grow!  And perhaps reach out to a local recent retiree organization, if your area has one, for folks with recently retired skills and with time to write those notes, layout that newsletter, etc.  We've also had luck with college students who might be in graphic design or even looking for community service credit.

    Best of luck!

I agree!  Keeping donors in the loop as to what you are doing with the dollars or in-kind donations they give is key.  They really appreciate the transparency.

A new volunteer came on board that had a great idea for a fundraiser and is running with it.  She proposed having an art show  with local artists with a percentage of any sales being shared between the artist and ourselves.  She has already identified sites willing to host the event and has connections to local artists.  One of my fears was that it would get dumped in my lap to organize and run it, but she has grabbed the reigns.  I'll let you guys know later in the year if it turns out to be the winner I'm hoping it will be.

What a great plan and blessing to have someone take responsibility.

We have an art event hosted for our rescue every spring! It is a great fundraiser and people look forward to it. We include a raffle as well as silent auction. They add to the total donations! Good luck😊

    Gwen,

That is great, especially that she is running with it. We need more volunteers like that! I am interested to see how it goes. We have an art district close to us.
