No, it is not SPAM.  Our TN-based non-profit qualified for the $10K a month in Google Ads (not any cash!) and started advertising in March 2024.  We run a variety of campaigns and you will need to have "landing pages" on your website for each campaign.  It is very complex and we actually hired a consultant to help us. She is based in RI and is an expert and animal lover too!   For Example: to keep getting the $10K a month, you must maintain a CTR (Click Through Rate) of at least 5%.  Ours has been around 15-17%.   We decided to try this for a year to see what the results are.  We've gotten a few new donors and definitely increased our exposure nationally which we hope will help lead to new financial resources.  I do think the fact we qualified has helped us with some national grants we applied for and received.  If you are interested contact me privately and I will provide name of our consultant.

Google Ads is a real thing, but this sounds like someone selling services to help you get and use the grant.  I'm sure there are legitimate services, whether or not this is one, I don't know.

Impossible to know without more details. I wouldn't trust any email out of the blue because literally anyone could generate it and then scam you. Don't click on anything in the email.  I'd go straight the source, aka Google, to ask about the program: https://www.google.com/grants

And this is the reason I have a little faith in the webinar sponsored by Instrumentl (which is a grant database vendor, but they pass along good info on getting grants). The webinar was presented by Elevation (a 501c3 focus media consultant). Again, I'll have a Zoom one to one with them next week and I'll pass along the results.

    Hey Karen,

    Hope you're doing well.

I would say, yes, it is spam. As an official government determined nonprofit, you are already eligible for the $10,000/month Google Ad grants. They can't offer you the ad grants. They may have services to aid in your use of the Google Ad Grants, but they are in no way "offering" you the grants.

    Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend a consultant to help us optimize our use of the Google Ads budget? We also get a lot of solicitation emails like the one you got - but we have no way of knowing if those people are any good. Would be great to get a referral of someone who has helped animal shelters or spay/neuter clinics as they likely know what words resonate with the public! Thanks in advance!

I was on a webinar Wed put on by Instrumentl & Elevation. The webinar told how a 501c(2) that's not a school or medical facility can get $10,000 a month of free Google Ads. We're going to apply for the grant through Elevation. Elevation's sales pitch was that they do 501c(3) charity PR programs. We can't afford them ($500 a month), but their offer to do the grant application for free and a one-on-one Zoom meeting next week will allow me to pick their brain some. Here is the email from their marketing department. marketing@elevationweb.org  . Like I said, I haven't used them and may have more to say next week. At least check out the Google Ad Grants and it's a continuous grant for "in-kind" marketing from Groogle. No cash but free ads.

I had a consultation with Elevation www.elevationweb.org this morning. It was a very good and friendly 15 minutes with the marketing rep. I told the lady up front that I didn't have budget and only wanted the free grant application assistance. That was no problem and we discussed what they will need from us. You have to request the grant from your gmail account (of course) so set up a special google ad account email that you use only for that -- helps stop the hackers. I've asked them to do the application and now we're off to the races!

Jo, I asked the Elevation marketing rep and they have a package to help you get started. $500 for 2.5 hours of  working with you and $1,000 for 5 hours and developing one campaign and a couple of ads. I think we're going to take them up on this to at least get started in the right way.

    Hi Buck,

Do you know if the elevation marketing cost can be paid with the monthly google ad allowance or is it a separate cost to the shelter?

    Thank you,

I would guess its a separate cost direct to Elevation. The Google Ads themselves are at no cost to the non-profit.

    Hi Karen,

IT'S A SCAM! Our experience was we were approved for the Google Ads 10k a month. The address even was Google (an old address in Chicago) so it looked legit. Our grant writer who started working on it soon realized it was a complete scam.  The company then asked for admin rights to our account after we were approved. They said they would do the plan for us. Our grant writer questioned this because that is not what the Google grant online states. The person responded again and our grant writer had put it into an app we use to check companies, scam detector website validator. It came up with such a low rating and will sometimes even explain why.  The ratings came back so low and she discovered it was a scam.

Our grant writer restarted the nonprofit process and waited two weeks to see if the original admin who was with the fake company claimed it and they didn't.

How they make the money is get access to your  account, take over your account, resell the 10K ads to someone else, and the fact they reached out to us first was a huge red flag! We are still working on the legitimate Google ad grant but beware of the scam that is out there. Especially organizations that might not have someone who does grants for a living or a marketing person. If it seems too good to be true it probably is.

Hope this helps someone from not getting scammed.

The United Spay Alliance has participated in the google ad grants program for a couple of years now.  We use it to promote Feline Fix by Five and to help with folks looking for access to low cost spay/neuter services.   It is a process to set up, but once you have the ads going and optimized I think they are very beneficial for non-profits.  Per our google analytics about 1/2 our traffic to the website is coming from google ads.  That is pretty significant for a small organization.    We are working with a volunteer from a program called Catchafire to help with the optimization of this program.

The United Spay Alliance has a lot of information to share to the general community so I would say we don't use google ads for fundraising purposes.  It is more for things like:   "I need to fix my cat", "I need to fix my dog", "When can I get my dog fixed".  That kind of stuff.   I would brainstorm key words/phrases(what you think people are searching for) before you meet with those experts to maximize your time and theirs.

Before embarking on this, you do need someone a bit tech savvy to be able to set up and manage it.

    Good luck,

    Hello,

I know I gave our experience with Google Ads and we were almost scammed but if they are reaching out to you be wary. With that said we are still applying for the ad grants. Google has verified companies that can help and the one that reached out to us wasn't on it. They also have a program you can ask a college student to help you and they will try to match you with one.

    Good luck!

Does anyone have a link or contact info where I could reach out to be matched with a college student who could help?  I already went through the potential scam situation and, like others, are wary.  Thanks for any help. - Jody

Good Luck Buck.  We've had the $10k a month since March and it is not easy to manage and meet ALL of Googles requirements to both spend the $10k and stay eligible each month.  Our goal was to increase online contributions.  We've run about 8 campaigns and we haven't had any increase in donations.  What we have had is lots of contacts nationwide to adopt cats, surrender cats and volunteer.  We're a small NPO based in TN and all this communication has taken time away from our work.  So just be sure you know what you want the Google ads to accomplish.  Sadly raising funds is not one of them from our experience.

Thanks for you insight. I don't expect too terribly much from our Google ads project except to spread our brand and to educate a few people. We're working with our local TNR group so if we can spread the word about our work, I think that will be good enough. We're paying for help from Elevation to get us through the first three months so we'll see. Again, thanks for you words...information is power but only if it's shared.

Over the weekend, the wife discussed Google Ads with about 24 other small pet charities. Total donations for the 2 dozen charities was about $800 while each was inundated with request/demands that the shelter take their pet. Several shelters had to change their phone numbers and email address because of the flood of requests. Our little hospice takes cats from only trusted partners and we've decided to not participate in the grant. While Google Ad Grants may work well for human oriented charities - it seems to cause endless problems for small pet charities. Thanks to everyone who passed us information.
