Hello everyone! I am reaching out to see how other organizations allocate fundraising funds(or any non-designated funds for that matter) between capital campaigns and general funds. We have been dreaming of a new facility for over 7 years(our current facility was built in the 70s and is much too small for current needs) and have finally have one in the works. We knew this was going to be a costly venture and have increased fundraising to help cover these costs. However, the majority of all fundraisers we've had in the last year and a half have gone straight to the capital campaign fund and very little has gone to the general fund for costs at the current shelter. The shelter has been getting by on adoption fees and donations that are not designated for the capital campaign, however we are starting to struggle and would like some insight on how other groups are allocating funds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on getting a new facility! 

The way our organization allocates funds from general fundraisers is typically 60% to high need areas (primarily vet care) and 40% to the general fund. This of course excludes purpose specific fundraisers, but for general fundraising it helps to immediately set aside a portion of the profits to general operations.
