  • 1.  How can we treat ringworm on kittens' faces not responding to oral Itrafungol?

    Posted 02-10-2025 10:44 AM

We have been treating a litter of kittens for Microsporum canis which was confirmed via IDEXX pcr.  The kittens were negative for Trichophyton spp.

Our treatment of choice is oral itrafungol (brand name...note compounded).  The kittens are not responding.

We are doing lime sulphur dips in addition to the itrafungol.

Unfortunately, the kittens have a lot of crusty patches on their faces and we are afraid of getting the lime sulphur too close to their eyes.

Is there anything that we can do in addition to the itrafungol and dips to try to address the facial area?

    Thank you in advance!

We are in a rural area with a lot of farm animals so we are lucky in this ONE regard...we have access to lots of ways to treat ringworm.  Our best is a topical solution called "Topical Fungicide" (how is that for an original name?) from Ideal Animal Health. (made by NEOGEN)  Its ingrediants are Benzalkonum Chloride .15%.   It works within one week.  We apply it with a cotton ball, just wetted and dabbed on the spots. We have never had a problem with it, even around the eyes, although we are careful to keep it out of their eyes.   WE LOVE IT, simply because it works so fast.  Hope that helps you.  I am attaching a picture for you.

We treat it with lime sulfur dip and use a toothbrush to apply it to the face. We also keep eyewash on hand just in case we get any in an eye, but that is pretty rare. The kittens stay calm with the toothbrush application and seem to think of it as being groomed.
