    Military working at humane society

How can you get better community involvement?

Our local humane society has been struggling to get volunteers who will come on a consistent basis and

be trained so that they are a valuable resource.  As we all know, there are standard operating procedures

that must be followed when cleaning and caring for our facility for the safety of the animals.  We put out a

Facebook post that we were in need.

We have recently been blessed with 3 different groups of volunteers that may work for you too!

    • Local Military battalion
    • School club looking for a service project
    • Girl Scouts -

We are fortunate to be near a military base, their team leader is an animal enthusiast.  He has gathered together

his battalion 2 days per month to come work at the shelter.  They cut grass, wash dishes, scrub empty cages …

they are a tremendous help.  The man hours they put in leave us to do the animal care that helps to get our animals

fed/watered/bathed and meet the medical needs of those who are sick.  Their service gives us time - a valuable commodity.

    Military Volunteer Group

Not only do they volunteer for physical labor, but they have also raised donations in their workspace and purchased food

for the shelter!  WHAT a wonderful blessing!

The military have stepped up for us in a huge way.  You may not have access to a military facility.  We have also had success

with high school clubs coming in for service project hours as well as Girl Scout troops who come in to help.

Maybe you are getting volunteers in your area from another source... PLEASE SHARE!

We have a group of military service men (no women at this time) from a local recruitment office come out once a week to help with physically demanding work and projects. This has been a huge help for us. They are so dedicated, loyal, and derive much benefit from their time with us as well. I affectionately refer to them as our Peacetime Heros.

We use social media a lot to get our communities  involved. A lot of our community likes to do volunteer but can't do physical work. We have found ways to get them involved.  We have Girl Scout tours, reading to cats/rabbits  programs, calm canine, and feline friends are some of the volunteers opportunities for the community.

We had a group nearby who matched seniors in the community with volunteer programs. We ended up with several regular, reliable volunteers from this!

We've had local seniors visit the shelter (and got 2 new wonderful volunteers as a result!), as well as a group of 1st graders (who were able to take turns playing with the cats via a wand toy, & learning how to read the cats' body language), and a group from our local 4H group.
