Hi Mary,
Are you able to contact the 3 adopters to follow up? If they still have the pups after 6 months then your $100 worked wonderfully. Adopted dogs are at risk of being returned within 2-3 weeks of their adoption and usually somewhere around 6 months so if the dogs are still in the homes then this is excellent data points that you can use toward your grants. My nonprofit does not offer S/N but when looking for grants I see tons of grants that speficially funding S/N as rightly so as S/N is crucial for limiting the number of animals that can potentially become homeless. As you know we have a shortage of vets so I empathize that securing a vet to help is difficult. There are also funding organizations that give small seed grants to help kick start programs, you should look into those as well. Try the Binky Foundation. They give a seed grant of $1000 which is not what you are looking for but depending on what you do with the seed grant, you can then apply for a recurrent grant with a larger amount depending on the need. Good Luck and hope you get that starting grant from the County Mayor.

I tried this method in November 2023 and saved 2 ten month old "pups" off of "death row" in 3 days!! I did pay directly to the VET and found excellent families for these 2 pups! Also saved a Basenji and paid for her spay as well! My actions "caught the eye' of the County Mayor, where I am currently applying for a small starting grant so that my list on 25 Foundations, I can request "matching funds"! I am a business woman so I get it that "you need to spend money " to make money! Of course, I want to save "every dog" but I did NOT win the lottery! No private VETS in my area are willing to give a RESCUE non-profit discount, so the S/N could add up to some serious dollars! S/N here or anywhere goes by weight because of the anesthesia, the actual procedure is 2 to 5 minutes!......Local Vets want to charge me $150 - 300, that's alot! Hi Mary,
Thinking outside the box and be innovative are great in saving lives and it looks like you are onto something. Here is my suggestion. I would do a small pilot study. Let's say you are able to save 5 animals by giving out $500. I would then follow up these animals to make sure the outcome is long lasting. I would also team up with a vet so you know the money is being spent on the animals. I have a small nonprofit and from time to time, I have offered to pay for adoption fees or spay and neuter but I would pay directly to the shelter/rescue and the vet who was doing the surgery. Let's say you follow up these 5 pets and found that your $100 toward vet bill of each pet really saved the animals life because the adopters still have the pets after 6 months and have no intention to return the pets. This kind of data will allow you to argue that the $100 is pivotal in saving lives. With these data, you can then write grants or ask for sponsorship. I am sure showing results that are long lasting is a sure way to get financial support. Sometimes one has to spend money to get money. So while you spent $500, you may get financial help that would be in the thousands. Thanks for saving lives. Good Luck

(I run a small RESCUE in Greeneville TN (GREENE ANIMAL LEAGUE.ORG) and because our pet-population is "out of control", I offered $100 to each new adoptive family to pay their first VET bill! We were able to save to 10 month old pups on "death row" in 3 days....If I had more money, I could make this a "regular offer" for the dogs on "death row"! I call it bribery but it captures a lot of inquiries and empathy of euthasia.....We need to win that 3K money! Mary Murray, LadywiththeHuskies, PROOF4PETS & http://greeneanimalleague.org
