Hello and happy Thursday! My name is Heather, and I am the Research and Development Data Coordinator for Human Animal Support Services at American Pets Alive!.
Research and data plays a crucial role in informing best practices and driving positive change.
How do you use research to inform your practices and improve the lives of the humans and animals you serve?

I just walk dogs and snuggle cats at a shelter a couple of hours a week, but in my day job I am an applied researcher/criminologist, and I would love to hear how you use data in your organization, Heather. Can you share some examples?

What interesting work! The Human Animal Support Services (HASS) Data Team is focused on research and development efforts for HASS programming. Animal shelter data analysis on lost pet reunification is one example. You can learn more about the Data Team's work in this recent webinar as well!

Hi Kevin, great question. Data is very important aspect of our everyday work. Heres a link to how we used data to address return to owner in Dallas. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2021.669428/full

    Hi Heather,

When it comes to supporting my community cat shelter, I use research to inform any work where possible. For example, for grant writing, I attend relevant seminars where available. For advocacy and legislation proposals, research is highly relied upon for support. This provides a basis for any changes we are asking for in relation to animal care. Hope this helps in some way!
