Santa Cruz Humane Society is a local animal rescue in my county of Santa Cruz Arizona (city of Nogales). Recently, they announced to the public that they will be closing in the fall due to lack of funding. With the help of a GoFundMe account, they have announced they will extend their closure until the end of the year. They are currently trying to negotiate a deal with the county animal control for purchase of the property, but I have been told that Animal Control would prefer to have a new building that is already in plans. I am posting in case there is someone in the forum thinking about starting a nonprofit animal rescue. If you are willing to relocate and can negotiate a deal for the current building, our county would be much appreciative. It's just my opinion that the pre-existing Humane Society has never operated properly or done what was needed to generate funds to continue animal services. The building is not in the best shape either, but the good thing is that it would be easier for someone to take it over and begin their own rescue organization due to the current setup and county officials already approving the location. Due to our severe shortage of veterinary services, there is a great database of local volunteers who are happy to help and do what they can for the animals, adding yet another bonus to someone starting up. The building is not officially up for sale yet, but anyone interested could most likely negotiate a deal and take it over before closure. Our county is in dire need of animal services. I'm not going to sugarcoat it; we are near the Mexico border, and things are different here. A lot of our county officials have been involved in corrupt practices and stealing tax dollars, but the FBI stepped in, which in turn required a state auditor to go over everything. It is at this stage where I think our county is able to grow in the right direction due to the scrutiny of unethical practices in the past. If anyone is interested in the Santa Cruz Humane Society property, they would need to contact Sue Rogers, who is the board president (cell 520-631-9093/humane society 520-287-5654). Closure of the Humane Society has been on the local news and in the paper, so this is common knowledge.
I found this site the other evening when just browsing for information regarding humane societies. When registering, I noticed this site is for multiple professionals. We are in dire need of every veterinary service. If there are vets looking to start their own practice, we need that. We also need an ER or Urgent Care, as the nearest ones are over 60 miles away, which entail going through a border checkpoint. There were two veterinarians practicing, but one has announced he will be retiring in September. The only remaining veterinarian is in his 80s and just underwent open heart surgery. There will be two small veterinary practices up for sale, as a another veterinarian retired during Covid and has had his clinic sitting vacant.
Keep in mind if/when thinking about purchasing a veterinary clinic in this area; it would not be something to consider if you are hoping for a high income. Many people in this area love their animals but cannot afford expensive vet bills. The perks of living here are the kind people, beautiful views, and the love of nature.
I have chosen to remain anonymous but am happy to answer questions and help the best I can if anyone is interested in establishing a business here or looking into purchasing the failing humane society. I know the one remaining vet personally and can put you in contact if you have questions, who I know would be happy to do what he could to help.
