Last week in a meeting with HASS pilot shelter directors, we had a really interesting conversation on this topic after taking a new look at data collected through the Intake Triage Project. The preliminary results show that behavior is actually the biggest driver of owner surrender intake over housing and over medical care.

Does that surprise you? It surprised us. Now that you know, how would you think of "Access to Care" differently than we think of it now?

I see so many posts for the NY shelters-and used to 'blurb' for Pets on Death Row. There,  the number one reason for relinquishment appears to be housing. As a Social Worker, I used to do ESA letters before they were called that for my Senior case-management clients. Either home health workers didn't want to walk dogs/scoop litterboxes so we eventually able to get in other workers who didn't mind-we even had a volunteer organization that would help.

Since the results are so new and only include a few months of data from a single shelter, I think it's way too soon to be making assumptions about intake nationwide, where other research and data still show housing being the number one or close to number one issue in many cities.
