Hello, everyone! My name is Liz Swaynie, and I'm the Executive Director of Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Willis, Michigan, that's been rescuing and rehoming abused, abandoned and neglected domestic rabbits since 1995.
I wanted to introduce myself and offer a hand to any shelters or rescues here who work with rabbits, or who occasionally find them coming through their doors and aren't quite sure what to do.
Rabbits are often cited as one of the most popular pets in the U.S., behind only dogs and cats, and they're also among the most frequently surrendered and abandoned. Yet many shelters aren't equipped to handle them, since staff and volunteers are usually trained around cats and dogs. Domestic rabbits have specific needs that differ a lot from what people often assume, everything from housing and diet to handling, spay/neuter considerations, and behavior. It's a species that's easy to get wrong with the best of intentions, and a bunny in the wrong setup or with the wrong diet can quickly decline.
