We have an established list of commonly used medications and pack medication kits for all new fosters.
Anything from monthly maintenance (dewormer) to emergency care (Hi Cal Gel), short of specialized meds like LR.
We're working on implementing Emergency Medication Kits for those fosters who agree to help respond to emergencies with Fading Kitten Protocol.
I've researched one phone app thus far but still trying to figure out how best to implement it. It's called Inventory Management.
There are several options on the app store though. I just haven't found one that works for me as a simple set up and tracking method.
I do recommend establishing a request-to-order system if you don't have one already to make sure you stay on budget. I also recommend only having one or two people monitoring stock and expiration dates. Too many hands in the pot makes a mess. If you buy in bulk, factor in supplies to divvy up the medicines: Bottles, Pouches, Syringes, etc.
As for donated medications, if they are in original packaging and not expired, add to inventory. If it can't be identified or is a liquid in an amber vial, it gets tossed unless you 100% trust the person who is donating it. As a former pharmacy person, I would recommend passing on 3rd party donations like "my brother-in-law died and his cat used this..." . Sometimes it's just not worth the risk. However, I will keep the emptied bottle. You'll find ordering medicine bottles gets pricey.

Subject: Inventory System
Our rescue is looking to establish an inventory system for its medications. We would be establishing from the very beginning and are looking for any suggestions. Also, how does your rescue handle donated medications? Thanks so much.
