In the spring, we have a Kitten Shower.  We ask our donors to purchase items we will need from our Amazon Wish List dedicated to kitten and mother cat items.

Several years ago, we came into a large donation of assorted china.  I was able to put together enough tea cups, plates and tea pots to serve 100.  We held a Spring Tea at a historical museum in the city where our shelter is located.   We served a traditional afternoon tea on fine linens, flower arrangements, etc.  I relied on volunteers with catering experience to make the finger sandwiches.  The various "sweets" were purchased at Sam's club or Costco.  It is the first event I have planned where the tickets sold out in advance and the shelter has been getting calls about when we plan to do it again.   Why it worked ?  Having the donations of the china and perhaps a donor base who liked this theme.

Hi Linda, that's a really great idea.  We've never thought to do that before.  I may give it a try in the future

We're doing skip a sip Fridays through April where we're asking people to skip a coffee, feed a cat instead.

We just started collaborating with a Paint and Sip company where they donate a percentage from the sale and we help with marketing! Our last painting for the paint and sip class was all easter themed which a lot of families loved !!

CARE (Chatham Animal Rescue & Education, Inc.) recently hosted a Paint and Sip fundraiser.  We were surprised at how many people in the community who had never heard of CARE signed up to paint.  We received a portion of the proceeds and also got some new supporters.  It was easy and fun.  We painted flowers.   Another option is to paint one of our pets.  This requires some preparation in advance but should be equally attractive to supporters and new folks alike.  A former board member restaurant owner hosted the event and provided light hors'd'oeuvres.  We bought our own wine, beer or water.

We did a 5K for the first time this year. Run for the Rescues and it was very successful. We were one of the first runs this spring and we had about 200 runners. For a first time event, we were very happy with the turnout! In summer, we're going to do "Second Chance Sips & Sweets" with donated homemade canned fruits and flavored lemonades. The summer one is completely volunteer based. They are going to set up a booth at local events to sell the homemade goodies, with all proceeds going to our animals!

I love this idea! Is Run for the Rescues based only in TN? We are definitely interested in participating in a 5k.

We toyed with several names and came up with Run for the Rescues. Other shelters and humane societies are also doing 5Ks and coming up with cute names. Now that we've done one, we get lots of ads for others, of course!

    Hi Renee,

Can I ask for additional details about your 5K? We are thinking of doing one but not sure if the effort would be make it worthwhile. Roughly how much were you able to raise for your rescue? If you can provide some details on how you managed signups, cost to signup and logistics of the event, it would be helpful.

    Thank you!

    Hi Jenna,

We netted about 15K. One third from signups, one third from individual donors, and one third from business sponsorships. We got our local K9 officers involved in a "battle of the badges" and that raised a significant amount of donations. We used TerraRunning.com to host the signups and donations. They are expensive ($1200), but they took care of all the signups and then did the timing for the runners. So we didn't have to create a separate web page or track signups or a separate donation page. Most importantly, we had a race director who put on a 5K previously, so she had all the ideas of how to set up, and we did all the behind the scenes work. We will make this an annual event. Hope that helps!

We do a dog walk at the local botanic gardens.  Normally you need to be a member or pay a fee to enter, so lots of local people have never seen what a beautiful place it is.  For $10 they can attend with their well behaved pup.  We have live music, food trucks and local breweries and distilleries sell their products.  There's also a silent auction.  A couple of years ago we added a crowd funding Pet of the Year contest, too!  We've been fortunate to have good weather, which obviously makes a huge difference!

I think it's successful because it's dog and family-friendly, and very casual.  None of our other events can be described that way!

We did a Spring Equinox "fashion show ". We asked people to send us pictures of their pet(s) with a minimum $5 per pet donation. I put all the pictures together in a video and set it to fashion show music. We called it Pawject Runway. We didn't raise a lot of money, but it got a lot of views and I think it's something we can grow and be known for. We'll do it again for the Autumn Equinox.

    Hi everyone,

I'm the Volunteer Director of a rural nonprofit organization in East Texas. Our community is made up largely of low-income households, with a significant number of senior citizens living on fixed incomes.

We've tried several fundraising efforts, including "$5 Fridays" to help cover veterinary expenses and a charity sweepstakes giveaway. Unfortunately, due to regulations (we've been established for less than three years), we're not eligible to host raffles or live auctions at this time.

We currently have about 600 followers on Facebook, but we've struggled to gain consistent support and engagement when it comes to fundraising within our community.

At the same time, we are in the process of applying for grants to launch a pet food pantry and a spay/neuter assistance program-both of which are greatly needed in our area.

I would truly appreciate any suggestions, ideas, or strategies that could help us improve fundraising efforts and community involvement.

Thank you in advance for your support!

We do a "Dog Days of Summer" fundraiser which is a combination of a fun summer BBQ and an adoption event. We get a local restaurant to cater the event so that it does not cost us anything, we have tons of pools set up everywhere for the dogs (and even humans if they want) to sit and splash in, and then have tons of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens for adoption.  We sell tickets to this event and find that our community loves it. We also have a silent auction with lots of donated items from local businesses for people to bid on.  We usually raise $5k+ and have multiple adoptions. Plus, the staff, volunteers, fosters, and community have a great time bonding!

We have used a lot of 3rd party fundraisers in the past year.  I would say of all of them combined (6-8) we raised around $2500 total.  Not a lot, but we wanted to give something to our supporters instead of our usual donation ask.  The best part is we did everything virtual and very little work on our end, aside from social media posts and answering questions.  We do tshirts/sweatshirts, flower and fruit & vegetable bulbs and seeds, Pampered Chef, Rada Cutlery and a wine fundraiser.  We have talked about a 5K or other race time event, but there are so many in our area, it would be hard to find a date that wasn't a conflict.  I love the fashion show idea! May have to try that!
