    Webcast Description:

With every shelter stuffed to bursting, finding fosters and adopters is crucial. For some pets this is simple, but others are harder to place. In this workshop, we'll discuss your favorite long stay pets to identify strategies for marketing them to fosters and adopters. This workshop is not just for foster staff– it's open to anyone who is interested in marketing pets who are harder to place!

Make sure to bring information about your own favorite or most challenging long stay. We'll choose several and work through them together, discussing what works, what doesn't work and some innovative new ways that can get extra attention and help them find the right home. We'll discuss how we talk about behavioral and health challenges in bios and social media and discuss the optimal ways to be frank about issues while also not deterring potential adopters. We'll look at different social media channels and how to optimize content about those pets for those channels to get the message across and help these pets put their best paw forward. Be prepared for a fun, frank and useful webinar with a lot of workshopping and participation!

To submit a question for our presenters or a long stay pet you'd like to discuss during the workshop, please fill out this form:

Hi All! I'm waiting on some feedback from Isobelle's foster so  I'm going to start with Terri.

    Some kudos first:

    • First of all, GREAT bio. Round of applause for whomever wrote it!!
    • GREAT use of photos and videos of her on social and the app - love the bath time video of her playing with a buddy,  the pumpkin pictures, her walking with Tahoe - LOVE THEM!
    • Excellent, excellent job keeping her in playgroups despite being dog selective. Standing ovation for your team for finding a way for her to keep interacting and enriching her.

    Some housekeeping:

    • Put more photos of her up on the 24/7 pet connect page, outside of the adopt me app. A lot of people don't scroll down.
    • With those photos, use some of her photos with other dogs and people, showing that she how sweet and playful she is.
    • Because of her coloring, her eyes sometimes get lost in the pictures - you can use chatgpt or gemini to lighten them up a bit so you can see her eyes.
    • More tik-tok and IG posts with her - again, use those great videos of bathtime with a buddy, playing with her handsome GSD and husky friends.
    • Has she been in foster at all? If not, is that an option for her?
    • I will never not suggest a pajama photo shoot for a pitbull. Amazon has some cheap ones.

    Tactics:

    • Because she does have known biological family, if any of them are in adoptive homes, reach out to those homes. Let them know she's available. Even if she's not a match for the home, ask if maybe they could tell their friends about her. People tend to feel somewhat attached to a beloved pet's 'family'.
    • Rebrand the muzzle shots. I refer to muzzles as party hats (my dog has to wear his party hat around other dogs).
    • There are facebook and reddit groups dedicated to dogs who need to wear muzzles - perhaps post in those groups just asking for 'ideas' to help her get adopted (if they don't allow adoption posts)
    • Her love for a specific type could be the key here. Based on her submission, she tends to do well with GSD's. We have a lot of GSD's in my neighborhood and a lot of the behaviors - the lunging at bicycles, dog selectivity, time to warm up, etc - are pretty on par with a lot of the ones I know. I would consider marketing this dog in GSD lover groups.
    • Go through her past adoptions and see if any of them were situational and might have changed. (IE housing issue, financial problem, etc) If so, contact them and ask if they would be willing to possibly re-adopt or foster her. Perhaps offer free behaviorist help and support if so.
    • While she's in the shelter, put a bounty on her. I love bounties. A bounty is a prize that the adoption counselor or staff member that gets her adopted gets. It could be a free piece of swag or a chipotle gift card. But when I managed an adoption team bounties were an amazing tactic to get staff more incentivized to look for opportunities for dogs or suggest them more.
    • Make sure the messaging inside and out of the shelter on her is solid and maintained. Perhaps ask staff to anonymously submit what they know about Terri (with no fear of reprisals) so you can see what the staff knows and how they might be communicating about her. Use survey monkey or something. The 'rumor mill' can be a huge impediment to getting dogs adopted and with so many animals in the shelter and so few hours in the day, it's natural that counselors would pass around what they know or heard about a particular pet.

Thank you again for trusting us with her and keep us posted on her journey!

Random photo of my dog in jammies because, as I said, I will never NOT put a pibble in jammies.

Thank you all so much for coming today! Tomorrow I'm going to take a dive into Isobelle, who looks like a whole party on paws, and Terri, who has the most beautiful face that makes me want to cuddle her all day long. If you'd like the slides from today, I've attached them in a PDF file here in case they can be useful to anyone. Thank you all again, animal welfare heroes!

Omg, Isobelle looks so regal in that first picture! She can truly live up to her name of Queen and be photoshopped on a throne, in a carriage, having tea, attending a ball, etc.  If you can get a video of her doing a little butt wiggle before chasing a toy, or movement in general, you could also do a play on 'dancing queen' from Abba.

My other immediate thought was 'the two sides' of Isobelle, being nice and being mischievious. Some of those photos definitely have a look of mischief.

Honestly, I just like to see all the cute pictures  :)

She is a stunning kitteh and I love the two sides idea. I'm waiting for some additional info on her from her foster but my first thought is that this QUEEN is a prime candidate for some anti-marketing. People LOVE naughty cats, particularly ones that can live with large dogs and other cats. I love her bio and am excited to come up with some tactics and ideas for her.

Totally agree! She is perfect for anti-marketing and there are a LOT of people out there who love a spicy kitty. My input on Isobel is, SHOW ME THE MISCHIEF!! Here's an example- these two kept getting into weird places in their foster home and their foster got video: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DGtDNjSJPWS/  When it was posted they were immediately adopted.

She reminds me a lot of the 'demon cat' that went viral and got adopted in days. Her new owners actually made an instagram. But while I was waiting to hear back from her foster, I jumped on that recent trend of asking chatgpt to draw/show a pet as a person and a disney character. I put in some basic information from Isobelle's profile and her photos and this is what came back.

    Posted 10-05-2025 07:17 AM

I relied via email on Friday , but it must not have gone through.  Here is what I said with more detail added.

She has very strong opinions about when and how she wants to be touched - more so than any other friendly and affectionate cat I've fostered.

Most of the time I can pick her up as long as I'm very gentle and fairly slow.  Sometime I can carry her around like a baby, belly up. If I try to pick her up when she is not in the mood or hold her too long, she growls first, then struggles and will then scratch and bite.   Its hard to explain how this is different than other cats who may not want to be picked up or held.

Daily interaction is not usually problematic for me since I listen to her cues. Its mostly when I'm trying to prevent her from doing something she shouldn't or getting her out of a space she is not supposed to be in that she can be difficult.  The only time she really hurt me was when I quickly grabbed her to prevent her from doing something dangerous.

She has had a few people come meet her because she is so pretty, but all passed because they were inexperience cat owners who were intimidated.
    Does that help?

    Hi Cheryl,

I apologize for the delay in this response. Unfortunately for some reason the photos you posted didn't come through - they just show as broken links. But thank you so much for the extra info:

    Initial Thoughts:

    • I would definitely would consider anti-marketing for this Queen. You can see an example of anti-marketing here - https://www.facebook.com/thedodosite/posts/a-shelter-wrote-the-most-hilarious-post-for-the-worlds-worst-cat-meet-perdita-no/1035772375251455/
    • If you're not a strong writer, you can paste what you wrote above into chatgpt and ask it to write a funny bio for her. You can ask it to do several versions until you find one you like.
    • Also I would lean hard into the 'spicy' thing. There are a lot of people who genuinely prefer their cats a little picante and a little challenging. I don't know if you're familiar with the youtube series 'Hot Ones', where celebrities are interviewed while eating progressively spicier and spicier wings. It's quite popular and often quite funny (Bad Bunny basically burying his face in a bowl of ice cream to try and cool himself off was a high point). But the spicy sauces are ranked by 'scoville units'. The more scoville units, the spicier it is. I would consider giving Queen Isobelle a scoville rating or maybe those pepper they use on menus to indicate spice on her profile or profile photo.
    • The bigger issue is that she just needs A LOT more exposure on social media.  Great job with the video that was just posted but definitely do more.
    • I also if possible would try and capture her spiciness (as well as sweetness) on film.
    • Also consider letting folks meet her before filling out the application. I would just have them call, explain the behavior over the phone and if they feel up to to the challenge, they can come meet her. That barrier - filling out a long application for a chance to meet her - might be putting off potential adopters.
    • Again just post post post post. Use the stories feature on Facebook to avoid flooding the whole feed and you can put videos of her there as well.
    Best,
    Finn

This would also be a great opportunity to jump into the zeitgeist. I have to admit I'm not a huge TV person but my husband is and the 'Wednesday' show on Netflix is one of the biggest things online. As they have a character of outcasts called 'Hydes' - who have two sides to their personality as well as 'Shapeshifters' who can change form and personality. I would do some AI photos of her in Nevermore uniforms using Wednesday themes to try and spark a connection or get into that fandom.
