Hello fellas,

I have to move to a new apartment in a couple of days and my landlord is asking for extra pet deposits in advance. Can anyone suggest me where can I get the best deal for ESA letter for housing? I really don't wanna pay extra to my landlord.

Most Landlords ask for Pet deposits If your Pet is not an Emotional support animal. Even I suffered from the same. My landlord asked me to pay extra money for my pet in advance. Can you clarify what you mean by having consulted with a psychiatrist?  If you have been under the care of a psychiatrist (or other healthcare provider) for disabling PTSD, then that professional should have no issue writing a suitable letter. If the consult was strictly to inquire about an ESA letter without any intent to be treated, then, as @DoS has indicated, that professional would be ethically correct to refuse to write the letter.

By the term "consulted with a psychiatrist," I meant, I discussed the symptoms of  PTSD, and how it is affecting me, I also asked the psychiatrist about how can I overcome PTSD. It all happened three months ago, and by that time, I had no knowledge of ESA's, and now I have no connection with the doctor. I came to know about the ESA letter because I am looking for a rental apartment and I want my pet to stay with me. Most of the owners are not allowing my pet to stay with me, and if someone agrees, he asks for a pet deposit in advance.

Your letter is not legally valid and can only be written by your current care provider.  You are lucky if you got away with this, it is also fraudulent and a crime to misrepresent an assistance animal.  If you have a real need talk to your doctor who treats your disability to get a valid letter.

The only legally valid way to be exempt from pet fees is if you have a disability and your current care provider (doctor) writes you a letter recommending an ESA for your disability.  The websites are scams and not legally recognized by the Department of Justice.  Landlords can verify your letter and it is also a crime to misrepresent an assistance animal.  Not wanting to pay pet rent is NEVER a reason to get an ESA and is making it so difficult for those who truly need and ESA or service dog.  Also you can still be evicted if your pet is disruptive or aggressive, and even possibly based on breed depending on what state you are in and if they are on a dangerous breeds list.  There is also a formal process you need to follow to request a reasonable accommodation, if you do not again you may be evicted for breaking your lease.  I run a service dog group and help people with legal access issues and have studied all of the laws.  Be careful where you get your information from because there is so much confusion around assistance animals.

I never wanted an ESA letter to avoid pet deposits. I'm suffering from PTSD, and living with my pet is the only thing that pleasures me. I never wanted to discuss it publicly because it stimulates the bad memories of mine. I have a little knowledge of emotional support animals. But, I didn't know the difference between legal or illegal ESA Letters. The only reason for me to ask about an ESA Letter is to get a legitimate prescription letter from a licensed doctor at an affordable price.
I own an 8 months old pug, and I never found my pet to be disruptive or aggressive. I have never been on medication, and I even consulted my problem in-person with a psychiatrist, but he doesn't write ESA Letter.

If your psychiatrist doesn't write ESA letters, a talk therapist should be willing to. Since you're not on medication or receiving therapy for your diagnosis, however, I don't know if a therapist would do it unless you committed to working with them long-term. My therapist was only willing to write an ESA letter after I'd been working with her for a significant period of time.

In addition, it's hard to tell from your responses if the psychiatrist you briefly saw actually diagnosed you with PTSD. You must have an official mental health diagnosis to get an ESA letter.

A lot of different fake information on the Internet. I want to put an end to this issue.

1. There are no housing, travelling and other tariffs. There is only the fact that your pet has become an Emotional support animal for you. And it's all!

2. There are online services on the Internet where you can receive an Emotional support animal letter.

3. Your letter is legitimate ONLY if it was written by a licensed doctor.

The law says that:

1) If you have an ESA letter, you can take your ESA with you aboard for free.

2) The landlord has no right to refuse you to live with ESA in his apartment.

I've been in your shoes not too long ago, and I completely understand how frustrating it can be when you're just trying to settle into a new place and suddenly get hit with extra pet fees.
