Thank you for those resources. I have a friend who's going through the decision for her dog and I want to be supportive of either direction, while not getting bitten.

Hi Augusta,
This is a great (and difficult) question. One of my favorite resources is a free webinar for families in that position: https://www.losinglulu.com/making-the-decision-for-families
The advice I give often depends on the situation. But generally I walk families (who are clients) through the process of thinking about options.
- Can you continue just living with the behaviors?
- Can you manage them (or prevent them within your situation)?
- Is training an option?
- Is rehoming a safe and ethical option?
When we come to the end of those questions and all have a "no" answer, regardless of the reasons, it's often easier for families to really view the choice as more than a yes-no option. I also counsel families who are always hopeful that some sanctuary or specialized rescue exists to work with this dog, and help explain that sanctuary spots are very, very rare.
I also give families permission to choose the safety of their family and community. I've found that because of taboo and stigma, people are often afraid to make the call not to continue living with a dog who is causing them harm. And this disproportionately impacts professionals, who believe they should somehow be able to tolerate or "fix" these dogs.
I ensure that my clients know that I'm in their corner regardless of the outcome, and will support them through the logistics of behavioral euthanasia or through management.
This is an excellent resource for professionals looking to learn more about having this difficult conversation: Approaching the Hardest Choice

Maddie's Insights is our ongoing webcast series with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. In October, @Miranda Hitchcock, MS, CDBC, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA will be discussing factors associated with behavioral euthanasia in pet dogs.
Date/time: Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 12n Pacific / 3p Eastern for one hour. This webcast will be recorded.
Behavioral euthanasia is a sensitive topic with a wide variety of personal thoughts and emotions. But what do we actually know about it? How often does it happen, and why? Do we have data we can use to make decisions? Where can we turn for information? This talk will walk you through the existing (and pending!) research on behavioral euthanasia to help us separate fact from fiction.
