This is the human-side-of-the-leash training video that comes after the above video "WHY does my dog DO that?" on the
givesmiles.us K9 behavior YouTube channel. It's called "12 Common Mistakes People Make with Their Dogs (and How Easy it is to Avoid Them)."
The 12 common mistakes discussed are:
(1) Expecting the best from under-exercised dogs.
(2) Expecting dogs to calmly sit, down or stay when they are all wound up. (Picture someone screaming Sit! Down! or Stay! to a hopping hound or dashing Doberman. It's much better to drop the dog's energy level through a little directed movement, then ask them to sit, down or stay when they are calmer and more focused.)
(3) Expecting dogs to readily respond to you when their focus isn't on you.
(4) Introducing dogs face-to-face on tight leashes.
(5) Reaching toward or over dogs you don't know. (There are much better
and safer ways to say hello!)
(6) Kenneling dogs face-to-face with their triggers (other dogs, most commonly).
(7) Not addressing human excitement (calmly), so it doesn't fuel unwanted behaviors in dogs.
(8) Breaking the 2 Golden Rules. (First rule: Reward what you want. Second rule: Stop rewarding what you DON'T want!)
(9) Not rewarding
calmness and
relaxation as good behavioral choices.
(10) Not leading the way at times when decision-making is important, so dogs step up to make poor decisions on their own.
(11) Not recognizing the effect of horror-mones on a dog's behavior.
(12) Over-fueling dogs by over-feeding.
Just a little good food for thought...
