A sudden one-sided face swelling + eyelid swelling in a dog (especially a 10-year-old) is something you should take seriously and try not to wait until Friday/Monday if you can avoid it.
Even if she's acting normal (eating, drinking, sleeping fine), swelling like this is most commonly caused by things like:
- Insect sting or bite (very common)
- Allergic reaction
- Tooth or gum infection / abscess (also very common in older dogs)
- Foreign body irritation
- Less commonly, trauma or a deeper infection
The important point is: dogs can look totally fine while something is still actively developing underneath.
🚨 When this becomes urgent
You should seek same-day or urgent vet advice if you notice any of these:
- swelling is getting bigger over hours
- eye is starting to close or looks painful
- drooling or pawing at face
- trouble breathing (emergency)
- lethargy or sudden behavior change
Even without those signs, because the swelling is progressing to the eyelid, it's still something I would try to get checked sooner than a few days if possible (urgent care / emergency vet / phone vet triage).
What you can do right now (safe steps)
- Gently check her mouth/teeth area if she allows it (don't force it)
- You can use a cool compress on the swollen side for a few minutes
- Keep her calm and indoors
- Monitor if swelling is increasing every 1–2 hours
- Take photos so you can track changes
⚠️ Don't give human medication (like antihistamines or painkillers) unless a vet tells you - some are dangerous for dogs.
About waiting until Friday/Monday
If the swelling is stable and not increasing, she's eating/drinking normally, and breathing is normal - it might be something like a mild sting or localized reaction that improves.
But because:
- it started suddenly
- it's on the face
- and it's now involving the eyelid
…it's safer to at least call an emergency vet or tele-vet tonight for guidance.
Bottom line
I wouldn't ignore it or fully wait several days. It may turn out to be something minor like a sting, but facial swelling that progresses toward the eye is exactly the type of thing vets prefer to assess early.
