    Dear Friends,

Allow me to introduce our foundation, Pawsitive Mind Foundation. Our primary mission is to connect rescue pets with individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, and abuse. In light of the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, recent data from census reports indicates that one in four adolescents experience various mental health issues. Additionally, the elderly, especially those living alone, are susceptible to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Operating on a nationwide scale, our foundation provides essential support to facilitate the adoption of pets into homes where they can make a significant impact. Research underscores the profound therapeutic benefits that companion animals offer in alleviating emotional distress. To this end, we cover adoption costs, provide three months' worth of food, toys, bedding, and even offer one month of training, with an average expenditure of $250 per household.

To ensure the well-being of both the pet and the adopter, we have established certain criteria that potential recipients must meet. These criteria are designed to ensure a suitable match and to guarantee the pet's welfare. Additionally, we require adopters to provide weekly Zoom updates, fostering accountability and ongoing support.

As a new foundation, we humbly seek feedback from individuals in the pet rescue industry.

    Valerie

What a great new program! Pets bring so much happiness to our lives just by being with us, sharing our lives. On a personal note, I participated in a grief support group after losing a family member. I met many older people there, primarily widows, many of whom expressed feelings of loneliness and depression after their loss. I did mention several times that I fostered dogs for a local rescue, and was able to get one lady to foster a pup for us (she ended up as a foster fail and now this puppy has a great home). I do think that the elderly especially would benefit from such a program to encourage them to adopt a dog or cat. I think my only concern would be the weekly Zoom updates... some older people are not very comfortable with technology and may really need some help to fulfill this part of the program. But otherwise I think it's a great idea!

Dear Patricia, thank you for your kind words. Yes, our program does extend to the elderly, and we do not require a Zoom call with them. We typically follow up with a regular phone call. Regarding the weekly Zoom meetings, those are only for the first two months, and then we require one Zoom call per month for the next six months. The purpose is to ensure that both parties continue to bond and to assess the conditions of the housing.

    Thanks again.

    Jill

    Hi Lydia,

What a wonderful program.  I am a trainer and have worked with clients who suffer from anxiety with some on the spectrum. Their companion pets mean the world to them, however, I also find that frequent checking in on my part is crucial.  One of my clients got upset at her pet, decided to put him outside in the rain for two days and forgot to feed him. Fortunately, she called me and told me about it. I had to take a deep breath to let her know gently that next time she felt agitated that she should call me first before doing anything. She acknowledged and told me that will not happen again. Fingers crossed. I think providing weekly Zoom updates is an excellent plan as well as ongoing support.  Do you mind sharing what criteria are you looking for in the potential participants?  Again congratulations on a much needed program for the elderly.
