Hot off the press! The Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health just published an article by Sue Neal and me, in which we report the results of a survey of community cat caregivers. Our findings-that community cat caregivers are very attached to the cats in their care-will probably be unsurprising to most people here, but we felt it was important to put some numbers behind what we've all known for years-and share by way of the published literature on the topic.
As we note toward the end of the article, our findings have clear policy implications-validating, for example, the common practice of returning healthy cats lacking identification (i.e. collar or microchip), regardless of perceived level of sociability, to where they were found, following sterilization and vaccination.
