  • 1.  Panleuk return from foster

    greetings,

I am fostering a 2-year-old male cat that was diagnosed with Panoleuk and Mycoplasma.  He has finished his doxycline for the mycoplasma and is eating and drinking on his own.  I have fostered him for approximately 21 days.   I am working to correct his diarrhea which I think is related to the recovery diet he is currently on.   He has had 2 FVRCP injections, one prior to being surrendered at the shelter and the second one yesterday.

My question:  when is he safe to return to the shelter?  The shelter does not have any guidelines for this question.

    Hi Dean,

First, thank you for taking on this foster cat. As far as when he should be allowed to be reintroduced back into the shelter, since the shelter does not have a policy in force regarding this situation, it should be based on the veterinarian's recommendation. Since he has just received a second FVRCP vaccine, I'm assuming the veterinarian will say about a couple post vaccine, if not already. About the diarrhea, if nothing has been seen as infectious, that should not render him unadoptable and simply go home with medication. What have you tried to curb the diarrhea? Does he still need the recovery diet? I'm familiar with it and if it is too rich for his system, that can cause diarrhea.

    Thank you for your response.

He probably doesn't need the recovery however it is the only food so far that he will take when I add the fiber.   I am only using just enough of the recovery to dissolve the fiber.  I am currently transitioning him to a higher end soft diet so the shelter can further transition to their can food.  It is a process to get a cat transitioned to a diet that the shelter can maintain.  On the positive side he is eating kibble.

He will have his 2nd FVRCP in a couple of weeks.  It sounds like an email to the vet after he has his 2nd FVRCP would be appropriate.

    Thank You again,

    Dean
