  • 1.  Parvo euthanasia

    Posted 03-11-2023 02:42 PM

My shelter took in 8 puppies that have  been diagnosed with parvo. Due to a combination of limited isolation space, staff shortages and funding not approved by management to treat the puppies so I am moving forward with euthanasia. The puppies have received a lot of attention on social media and I am expecting a negative response from my community.  Any pointers on how to soften the blow when we share the outcome with the community. My staff are heartbroken and I am worried about the impact of an attack on social media.  I thought about sharing the heartbreak of staff and the dangers of not getting your dog vaccinated. Thoughts?

    Hi Shelley--

You have described a very challenging scenario. Before yielding to what management has dictated, does Surrey have a network of rescues or veterinary clinics who can be asked to take one or more of these puppies under their wing?  They may be able (and willing) to fundraise appropriately, especially if there has been significant public interest.  If hospitalization is not possible (although highly preferred) outpatient therapy by skilled volunteers under a vet's guidance may be a last-resort option. The point being that unless the shelter explores every possible option to avoid euthanasia, you can count on significant and caustic pushback.  Talking about vaccination is always a great idea, but associating  that now with these puppies seems, in a way, to be blaming the victims (the puppies, not the negligent individual who surrendered them).  Similarly, if the public senses that the shelter did not try any external appeals, the reaction will likely be extremely critical, despite how your staff feels.

Hopefully an alternative to euthanasia can be found ASAP; even if one or all of the pups expire during treatment, an earnest attempt was made to save them.

I agree with Greg. See if you can reach out to rescues.  They very often can take one or two dogs and quarantine them while it's overwhelming for you to have 8 puppies.  I think there will be a lot of nasty blowback if you euthanize them that will live on in social media. These little ones didn't ask for parvo.I would try everything you can.

Can you ask for donations specific for them- explaining their lives depend on the donations?  The idea of reaching out to vets and rescues to ask for help is also good advice.  Would management agree to save some of them if others had help? Such a sad decision and situation.  My heart goes out to you.

We have successfully brought a number of dogs through parvo using Tamiflu (prescribed by a vet) to stop the diarrhea and vomiting, and sub Q fluids to keep them hydrated.  Of course, that assumes having sufficient staff to be dedicated to care, since while they're caring for a parvo-infected dog our staff are not allowed to interact with any other dogs.

I am sorry that you are in this position and I hope that whatever the outcome, you and your staff can learn and grow from it.

    Hi,

There is a published and reviewed parvovirus outpatient protocol from Colorado State University.   https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27918639/

There are many online posts about this protocol so hopefully it should not be too hard to find someone who has some experience with it or a version of it.

There are versions of this that are practiced as "spectrum of care" in shelter and primary care settings when the complete protocol isn't possible.  "Gold standard" is hospitalization but that doesn't mean it is the only options besides euthanasia.   Agreed, some puppies might not live through the virus but with care some of them very likely might.  I'm so sorry you are in this situation.  It's a really hard spot to be in for sure.   I hope you can get some folks in your area to  help with this.

    Good Luck!

    Hi all,

I'm so sorry for the loss of these little ones and the heartache that this situation causes.  Don't lose hope, keep trying to make life better for as many animals as you can.  You're doing good work!  Shelley & Greg, please know so many people are thinking about you and all the folks who work so hard every day.

Thank you to everyone who offered support. Many of the resources that were suggested, we just don't have. It has been a heartbreaking experience. My shelter has not dealt wit parvo before so this was a learning experience. The support from the community has been comforting during this very difficult time for my staff. I have made a few contacts that I will be working with to review where we fall short for being able to treat in shelter and  what barriers there are to make the changes needed.
