Recent research by the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative (PIHI) team with more than 500 pet-owning renters in the U.S. indicates that the challenge of finding housing has increased since our foundational research in 2021. Over 83% of respondents now say pet-friendly housing is hard to find. This figure emphasizes the continuing need for pet-inclusive housing work. PIHI will be sure to add more insights from this recent research to this discussion thread.  In the meantime, let us know what pets and housing data you're interested in, or share your own pets and housing data!

This is such important research. Thank you for continuing to highlight the struggles pet owners face in securing housing. The 83% figure is striking and underscores the urgency for more inclusive rental policies.

I would like to see more research done on homeless people and pets. Related subjects could be laws, resources.

According to the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative's latest research, which surveyed more than 500 pet-owning renters across the U.S., 69% identified pet-related fees as a barrier to finding pet-friendly housing. In addition, 35% of respondents cited breed restrictions, and 41% pointed to size or weight restrictions as challenges in securing housing that accommodates their pets. These findings underscore the need for PIHI and others to continue working with housing providers and policymakers to help reduce the financial and policy barriers that separate people from their pets.

Bar chart showing that pet-related fees, followed by weight/size restrictions and breed restrictions, is the number one burden for pet-owning renters.

I'd be interested in seeing data from shelters/rescues regarding the increase in surrenders due to housing issues.

Investors need to begin building pet-friendly apartments.   I do not mean apartments with a "dog run" or "mini dog park."  Apartments need to be pet sustainable. Remove the carpeting- concrete floors can be beautiful. Remove the wood baseboards. Redesign the most common "things" that pets can damage that cause the complex to not only attach additional cleaning fees to tenants but also additional monthly rent.

I completely agree! Usually the carpet they put in isn't that nice either. I'd much rather have pet friendly floors and add rugs as needed then have to worry about the cheap carpet most places put in that will end up charging us to replace anyways.

I also always suggest to people to ensure you take before move in pictures and after move in pictures. We once had an apartment that at move out, tried to say we had pet stains on the carpet and they were going to charge us to replace the entire carpet. However, since we had before and after pictures- we were able to prove that the carpet pictures they sent, was not even our apartment! The air condition vents and thresholds were completely different.

Monthly pet rent is the top pet-related fee burden for renters-across all income levels.

That's what we found when we asked pet-owning renters, "Which of these pet-related costs has been the biggest problem for you?"

This finding raises an important question: Beyond the financial strain, do renters see any value in paying pet rent? Or is it viewed simply as a penalty for having a pet, without any tangible benefit in return?

At the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative, we're digging deeper into how renters perceive pet fees like this-and how that perception may shape housing decisions, equity, and well-being. To learn more, visit petsandhousing.org.
