We are trying to make sure all our pets leave with collar and ID tags on but stuck on making it work. Does anyone else do this and how?? Looking for ideas to make the follow easy. PLEASE HELP!!

My old shelter used to get a lot of donated collars, leashes, etc - both new and used. We would wash the nice-looking ones and keep them in a cute basket up front for adopters to choose from before they left with their pet. We never got to the tag stage, but we looked at getting a small tag engraver that could stay behind the front desk and would allow people to buy tags from us and engrave them right there. If I remember correctly the ones we were looking at were $1k+ so that was the sticking point for us.

Our shelter in Brownsville, TN has wanted to do this too, but those tag makers are expensive. One option I thought of is buying tag blanks and using a cricket to vinyl on the letters. It may not last as long as being actually engraved, but is an option to consider!

All of our pets who are old enough for a rabies vaccine leave the shelter with tags.  We used to have adoption staff put a collar and tags on each pet before leaving the building, but it is just not possible anymore due to staffing and the time it takes.  We do encourage owners to have ID on their pet(s) at all times.  Fortunately, all of our adopted pets are microchipped in case the owner doesn't get the tag on after arriving home.
