Hi Stacy! I agree with you about spay/neuter, and applaud your incredible efforts doing TNR.
Our rescue donates to spay/neuter clinics in our state as we realize that we cannot adopt our way out of this crisis. We did a really well received 2 part episode on the population aspect of the pet crisis and have an episode planned with the director of a group that does spay/neuter in the 4 corners. These are the "tails for the trenches" episodes and we need to do more of them.
The goal of our education is not only to provide behavioral resources (although that is big focus, since that is my expertise and profession), but also to explore the aspects that make up the crisis itself. I believe we can't change effect change on a large scale if we don't understand the basic components of the crisis. Spay/neuter is definitely a huge component, if not the main one... although I am not sure we can even spay and neuter our way out of this, because dogs will continue to come in from other countries and puppymillls will always be a problem in a capitalist economy.
Our podcast program costs less than $1000 a year and we use our expertise to try to effect as much positive change as possible, from our little corner of the world. Our hope is if more people understand the crisis, more people will use their voice to advocate for animals.
We couldn't agree more that local lawmakers should be doing more to provide low cost spay/neuter and vet care for underserved populations. Much of Colorado (especially the Front Range) has implemented programs to provide low cost spay/neuter, low cost vet care for those who qualify for it... which is one of the reasons Colorado is the receiving state for so many states around us (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah).
We'd love to delve deeper into the topic of spay/neuter, and how to organize people to advocate at the local level for more funding of spay/neuter. It dumbfounds me why in this century, municipalities pay for impounds and euthansia serum, but not for spay/neuter. Our model is archaic and based on a public health model from a century ago.
Love these conversations and brainstorming about more ways to push the dial in favor of our companion animals who are suffering.

Stacy,
I have to agree. We can "educate and inform" the public , but without resources for spay and neuter, it does no good. In our city, there are not enough affordable clinic spots for cats and dogs for the people who want their pets sterilized. Perhaps educating and informing the city leaders and community leaders with access to funding and infrastructure would be a more inportant focus for our efforts. I believe that our city leaders do not realize what the problem is, and all the while, organizations like all of ours continue to subsidize spay and neuter, as well as placement of these animals in our cities. Perhaps there should be more with skin in the game at the local and state government level.

Hi all;
I believe there is only value to education IF you have the resources in place to support it. In my world, there are so many people who know to get their cats spayed/neutered, but it is impossible to support the cost. So if we are resource limited- I really do think we have plenty of folks who need access to subsidized s/n care.
We need to make sure we don't have multiple organizations doubling "education"- that is expensive and wasteful. Those $'s can go into scaling and supporting the incredible stress we are feeling at the veterinary level right now.
Just my opinion we need to be very careful and strategic about how we use our funds in our communities.
Thanks, Stacy

Thanks everyone for being so supportive!
I think the more we all do this, the more we realize that education is the foundation for creating successful placements for our companion animals.
I am grateful to be part of such an incredibly community! Thanks everyone!

Emily,
I also believe that education is key to animal (and people) welfare.
I recent years with the use of studies and their data many strides have been made--it has drawn me in even more.
Thank you so much for your resource--I will check it out!

Hi there!
I would like to add our podcast as a resource to the Maddie's Fund community. I hope that is okay! I am the director of a rescue (501c3) in Colorado that I founded over 15 years ago. During that time, I became a mulit- certified professional dog trainer in order to help support the fosters and dogs in our rescue.
During the pandemic we launched Pod To The Rescue, to share what we had learned with other rescues and shelters, adopters and fosters. We interview world reknowned experts in behavior (Dr Patricia McConnell, Michael Shikashio, Kathy Sdao are just a few of our guests!) and also try to cover topics that are salient to rescues and shelters.
We believe education is a key component of reducing the shelter pet crisis, especially in our post-pandemic world. We'd love it you take a listen and share with any one you know who might find our content helpful! The podcast is available on all podcast platforms, as well as on our website.www.podtotherescue.com
Thanks so much,
