  • 1.  Polydactyl Cats

    Hi!

I had an idea to create a Polydactyl fact sheet for adopters just with some fun facts but also things to keep in mind when adopting them. I have personal experience with them getting ingrown nails but also having problems with their feet occasionally. Has anyone else created a fun fact sheet? Just looking for some input but also help with wording things.

    Thank you in advance!

This is what I have come up with so far! Any tips would be appreciated

    • While regular cats have eighteen toes, polydactyls can typically have seven toes on each paw but it isn't always consistent, some have more or less!

    • To them it's not a big deal! They still go about their daily activities like any other feline.

    • This genetic mutation first became popular in the 1800's

    • They were known as "ship cats" for their ability to hunt mice.

    • These feline friends are fairly common even though they tend to be located more in western parts of England and the east coast of Canada and the United states

    • A friend of writer Ernest Hemingway gave a polydactyl cat to him which the ship captain named Snow White. He then filled his house in Key West with polydactyls over the years. That's why people call them Hemingway cats!

    • Regular grooming and maintenance for polys is very important as they are at a higher risk for ingrown nails

    • Sometimes their extra dew claws can get embedded and can be very painful which might need surgery to remove them.
