  • 1.  February 2023 Resource Drive: Community Partnerships

    Posted 02-01-2023 12:36 PM

This month our resource drive is focused on community partnerships.

    What are Community Partnerships?

When animal services agencies connect with other organizations, both benefit to better support people and pets where they live. Creating relationships with human and environmental organizations that may not traditionally help animals offers a more holistic approach to care.

Potential partner organizations may include child welfare agencies, organizations that provide support for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, scouting and youth organizations, chambers of commerce, social services, public health agencies, food pantries, senior services, domestic violence support services, government agencies, non-profit organizations and organizations that promote racial and social justice and equity.

Successful community partnerships allow for the expansion of programs and services and increase support for families to keep their pets. These partnerships, in turn, may decrease the number of animals that need to enter the physical animal shelter.

What problems do Community Partnerships solve?

Traditional animal shelters and animal services agencies operate in isolation, cut off from larger community conversations about human and environmental well-being. When we consider animal shelters through a One Health framework, the health of animals is connected to the health of people and the health of our environment. In other words, to address the root causes that lead to animal welfare issues, we need to connect to organizations outside of the animal world.

I am very interested in partnering with other community organizations; in fact, that is one of our goals for this year.  Other than writing a letter of introduction, what are some ideas to accomplish this.  We are a small community, less than 60,000 total and there are several rescues (which we partner with most through a coalition).  Resources are tight to say the least and we really struggle with new ideas and approaches.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One positive relationship that we have is with our local united way. They have the 211 resource number where people can call and get information about which agencies can best help solve their current problem/situation/crisis. Our united way trains their staff to ask about pets during the call so that they can point people to our organization when they are in times of crisis. (We have had a pet safety net program for more than a decade and our experience has taught us that the earlier we can intervene the easier it is to keep a pet in its home.) We also recently had a meeting and tour with our local United Way and they helped set up meetings with other local agencies to develop partnerships. Definitely recommend starting with UW if you can.

We formed a partnership with our local chapter of FFA.  They collect items for us during Christmas.  Last year they shelter themed their float in the Christmas parade and we took some dogs to ride on the float. They also passed out dog treats with adoptable animal photos on them during the parade. They also collect items for the shelter in lieu of entry fees for competitions.

Our shelter is involved with several great community partnerships. Here are just a few:

    • Our local United Way (nonprofit) holds a Day of Caring every year. We have aligned our annual Rummage Sale to start the day after this day of caring. We are one of the projects for the event and during the project, community volunteers come out and help to set up our MASSIVE rummage sale. It takes 75 people 4-5 hours to unload, unbox, and set up all the items. We couldn't hold our sale without this partnership.
    • Another partnership we have is with the local public school's foundation (nonprofit). They hold a Paw Art fundraiser. Elementary children will draw a picture of your pet for a $20 donation. Funds raised go to the school foundation, the school system art program, and our shelter. We don't make a lot of money from the event, but the foundation invests in television and newspaper ads that run frequently with our name and logo. This is advertising that we could not afford otherwise.
    • We partner with several local human aid organizations. We distribute pet food in large baggies to those in need through our Buddy's Bowl Program. We get donations and discounts from businesses to buy pet food, and donations from the public, then volunteers rebag the food into easily transportable size bags and volunteers distribute to the agencies who serve people in need. A local pet store also partners with one pet food company to give us a kickback on food purchased during certain frames to help us fill the need.
    • We partner with a dozen or so other rescues and shelters within our state to hold a virtual run event every year (North Dakota Race for Rescues). Larger rescues and shelters are able to bring in the most registrants and we have an equation for figuring how to split the money. The smaller rescues benefit from the draw of the bigger rescues and everyone earns money. My rescue acts as the fiscal agent and handles communications. This event started out of the pivot during COVID, where our annual road race fundraiser had to turn into a virtual event. After that, we left it virtual and invited all the 501c3 rescues and shelters in our state to join in.

We work hard to find ways to partner with local businesses, fellow nonprofits, or other organizations. It is the best way to stay relevant in your community and get your message out to the public. We are always searching for new ideas and ways to work with partners.

Our community partner in February was a couple of elementary school enrichment programs, each week the rescue brought in a few dogs for the children grades 3-5 to pet and we used the dogs to show about proper wear of collars; how a hand held leash is better than retractable; the importance of microchipping along with foods that are safe for dogs.  We provided hands on experience along with a couple of interactive games and sent all the students home with a gift and some fun word searches and more.  After the first week we were contacted by two more schools interested in having the rescue present this program to their students.
