Animal Welfare Professionals

Help us create a repository of translated materials in Maddie’s Pet Forum! This month, our resource drive focus is on sharing examples of materials that your organization offers in a language other than English.

The best way to reach your community members is to speak their language. According to the US Census, in 2019 the number of people in the US who spoke a language other than English at home was 67.8 million which is almost 1 in 5 households.

 

You can participate in 2 ways:

1.  Reply to this post and upload/share materials that your organization has in a language other than English * (See Pro-tips for sharing resources at the bottom of this post)

2.  Reply with a request for a specific resource you’re looking for in a specific language

AKC has canine care resources and educational handouts in Spanish. Some are applicable to those who have pure breeds, but there's plenty of informative, free brochures/handouts available for download and printing in Spanish. Our Dog Lovers' League has used some of these as educational materials at events. AKC does a great job with public education. We are often working on TNR in Spanish speaking communities. We are using this one page TNR informational page adapted from the Central PA Humane society flyer, and we translated to Spanish, so we can print both English and Spanish in one page. We adapted the trap tag templates from Alley cats and translated to Spanish as well.

Here is our cat adoption contract in Spanish and Vietnamese. We added the translation for other species and this will make it easier to switch the species for most of the paragraphs of the contract.

These translations into multiple languages are awesome.

Do you print in each language and then have a QR on the printout of each language?
Or, do you have one printout with multiple lines in multiple languaes, each with its own QR code.
The group I'm in is trying to save paper (and the adoption space is limited in terms of hanging things or display).

I'm so excited! We're updating our phones and are going to be able to have an option to hear in Spanish! We have a wonderful volunteer from Spain who is helping us! 

side note: we had an adopter who spoke Spanish but English was good too! His family on the other hand not so good with English so our volunteer came in and explained everything in Spanish!  Our little Jamie the pup is learning cues in Spanish! Love it! 

we are trying to get our foster and adoption applications translated to Spanish! I'll upload when completed! It really made me realize how hard it must be for people who come here not knowing English! Lesson learned!

Best Friends has some excellent bilingual (Spanish/English) educational materials in a variety of topics.  They even added our logo to what they had.  Suggest you contact them for help if you need Spanish language materials.  Topics include things like What to do if you find kittens, Spay/Neuter, Vaccinations, Microchipping, Rehoming, FIV, etc.

KittyKind is a small cat-rescue and adoption group in NYC that specializes in adopting special-needs cats. KittyKind has started a "Meow Library" of translated resources. It uses translated material from other shelters/rescue groups that it collaborates with, as well as creates its own material. Currently, the translations are in Spanish, but since the group is in NYC, there are many other languages for which translation will be useful. KittyKind has many bi-lingual volunteers who have offered to proofread an initial translation from a Microsoft Word Translate.

Thank you to the other groups who communicated how they print the materials with a QR code and display the materials at the adoption site. KittyKind is going to do that, also, The QR code eliminates the need to have multiple paper copies on site. Regards.

I am so excited about this drop box of awesome information to help us in our transition of going from an animal sanctuary to a rescue as well!

In that, I want to say an extra thank you to those who shared their resources for us to reference as we build new programs that are accommodating to more than ever before!

Right now, our bilingual animal caretaker is customizing and converting much of our written animal care procedures and the future policies that will be in place once we receive the licensing. Here is an example of our cat animal care checklist and rehab focus for the time being, it isn't much, but we are so grateful for all the comments!
