Hi everyone,
I am a lecturer at the University of Vermont in the Animal Science department. This semester I am teaching a service-learning course called Animal Shelters. We meet at the local humane society and the class time is split between a more traditional lecture or discussion and some volunteering. A lot of the students are pre-vet and are very interested in the shelter med side of things. I don't have a background in veterinary science and though the shelter we go to does have a robust community clinic, they unfortunately aren't able to speak to the students about it due to scheduling and time limitations (which I imagine is the case for many shelter workers!). So I just thought I'd post here in case anyone here who is/was involved in shelter medicine was interesting in guest lecturing and sharing a bit about shelter med, how it differs from private practice, what they think are the most important things they think students should learn about it, etc. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to provide any compensation. The students meet on Monday at noon and 1:30 Eastern time and we could have you join a video chat to talk about it (how long is totally up to the guest speaker, but maybe around a half hour to 45 minutes?). We could also just have you speak once any time between 12 and 3pm on Monday, or even play a video recording someone wanted to make one or one already exists on the topic. It can be an informal Q&A session or a more structured presentation - a lot of flexibility in this realm.
I do a sort of flipped classroom model and give the students plenty of resources to read/watch/listen to/etc before they come to class on the topic for that week, so I'd also happy take suggestions for resources you think I should have them consume to learn more about shelter med! This is a entry-level class, but they are bright and eager to dig into things, so a variety of sources could be useful.
Thanks for any suggestions - I appreciate it!
*There's also a week on international animal rescue (I'm thinking focusing on the practice of importing animals for adoption into the US from other countries as well as showing how free roaming animal welfare/animal sheltering works in other countries compared to the US) and another week on feral/community animal care and ethics if anyone has suggestions for those. :)
