    Hi everyone,

I am a grant writer, not a veterinary professional. I am sharing this with you because it was sort of a miracle for my cats and for our local cat shelter in the South Caribbean canton of Talamanca, Costa Rica. I don't understand why it's not more widely known or practiced. About a year ago, I adopted a new cat. It turned out that he had giardia, and two of my other cats got it. One of them is semi-feral, and there was no way I would have been able to give him metronidazole pills twice a day for 7 days as the vet directed. The other cat was spitting the pills out. I searched the internet for "giardia treatment for feral cats," and I found this presentation that was given at a Maddie's Shelter Medicine conference at the University of Florida in 2017. Dr. Cynda Crawford presented on treating cats and dogs with  only one dose of the human giardia medication secnidazole. It seemed too good to be true.  Then I found two published articles on the topic (one referenced in the presentation), which I just uploaded to the Maddie's Pet Forum library and have attached here.  My vet read the resources and discussed it with her colleagues, and she agreed to try giving my cats the one dose of secnidazole, which I purchased at a local pharmacy. It was successful for my cats, who subsequently tested negative.  After switching to this protocol, our local cat shelter (Los Gatitos de Marlies) is giardia-free for the first time in several years. Here's the link to the presentation online, which is also in the library: Giardia in shelter dogs and cats: Is there a single-dose treatment? Is there not some other treatment regimen we can discover that is more successful, not only in curing the infection, but from a staff and animal welfare perspective as well?
