  • 1.  Shelter Hours Question...

    Posted 01-29-2024 12:41 PM
I would like to know what hours other shelters and rescues are open to the public. My shelter is currently open Tuesday through Saturday from 12-4 p.m. I am wondering if this is in line with what others are doing. I'm also curious if other shelters that are open after 5 p.m. when people are typically off-work see visitors then, etc.
I hope this is okay to ask here! Thank you so much!

We are open 12pm-7pm, every day except major holidays. We tend to have a steady flow between 5pm-7pm on weeknights. The weekends we tend to be busier 12pm-4pm.

Seems very similar to our adoption hours which are 12-5 Tues-Sun.  Mornings are for cleaning and playgroups. On Mondays we are closed to the public for deep cleaning. We are also closed on major holidays with short shifts twice a day for feeding, spot cleaning, and exercise, usually 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm.  Staff rotate working holidays. We tend to be busier on weekends but sometimes afternoons can get a little hectic.  We are in a college town though.

My local shelters are open until 6/7pm and weekends. People can't come visit during the week if you are only open until 4pm!

Objective-insure that every visitor has a safe and pleasant visit.

Staff-Have to have enough staff to ensure facility is visitor ready sanitation wise and keep it that way thoughout day, enough staff on floor to assist and manage visitors whereabouts and safety, enough customer service staff to answer phone, greet customers, perform all adoption related services.

Season-We are in a northern tier location. heavy tourist industry  in summer, ghost town in winter.

We are limited by budget for staffing and this is primarily what drives our hours so that we meet the objective of customer service and safety. We have been creative in processes to maximize access and service during operating hours.

    Hours-

    Sat/Sun- closed, 2 floor worker/minimal clean protocol/ access by phone 8-2.,

    Mon open 11-2,  3 - 4 floor workers( varied shifts), 2 reception/adoption workers/full clean 8-11.

Tues- Fri 11-5,3-4 floor workers( varied shifts), 2 reception/ adoption workers, full clean 8-11. Super cleans are worked in on specific areas throughout week.

    Myself as manager varies.Closed holidays.

Reception covers absenteeism on floor. I cover absenteeism on floor and reception.

No one idea is a one size fits all ...
