Shelter Renovations

    Hello Everyone!

I am a volunteer with a local open admissions city shelter. I also serve on a board for a non-profit that supports the shelter. Our shelter has received funding, and the formal plans to have our kennels renovated. The timeline has come upon us rather quickly, and plans are being put in place currently,. We have limited space and resources for temporary housing. The project is anticipated to take 9 months. I wanted to reach out to see what other organizations have done to get creative with  housing as well as some of the other aspects of animal sheltering during such a time. Thank you all very much in advance for your time, and for sharing!

I think I read about this shelter on this site that had damage to their facility and had to find placement for all their dogs and cats.  They put the word out in the community to foster and the community responded in such a positive way that 85% of the animals ended up being adopted!

We completed a remodel at our location this year that took a few months. We tried to get as many of our dogs in foster homes as well as stopped intake on animals. For the animals we couldn't place, we moved them all to one side so we could safely start the remodel with the residents that we had. It took longer than expected, but we love the results and are now able to continue our intake of animals. Also a lot of fosters ended up keeping them animals or fully adopted them.

    Hi Stefanie,

Would you be able to share the Before and After photos, once the renovation is done? I love to see it.  I am sure the remodel will improve the dogs' welfare in the future. Wonderful to hear your shelter can do this for the dogs.

How did your shelter get funding for renovations?  I am in Los Angeles.  All our city and county shelters are in shambles.  Our mayor just cut funding for LAAS.  Those of us in animal welfare are in despair....

Hi Melissa, it took YEARS of asking and pushing!! Our shelter director would be able to give you more information on the process, and she loves to communicate with other groups. Our organization is City of Tallahassee Animal Service Center if you wanted to reach out to her.

I volunteered for an emergency animal rescue. The rescue rented barn space from a farmer to house all of the dogs. He allowed the rescue to set up crates, kennels and use the stalls.

We are doing something similar. The county has some property and a barn across the street from us so we are going to try to get as many in foster as we can, and then house the rest in the barn for a short term solution.
