Is there a database to look for rescue transfer partners? I have tried the ASPCA but they are not accepting new source shelters until they get more destination shelters. We are overcrowded and short staffed and need to make kennel space.

    Hey!

There isn't a datebase that I* know of but that doesn't mean a lot ;)

Just stopped to give solidarity in the fact that we and many others across the country feel the same pain. We've started doing out of state adoptions which is new for us to kind of open the door of transports on a larger scale and get our name out there more. We are in Texas. We also have posted on our social media for people to tag their favorite rescues in and out of Texas to see if we could gain transport facility partners that way and lastly we made a quick slide show to show our potential partners everything we can offer them with our animals (pictures, videos, temp tests with other dogs, full vetting before transport, etc) and have used this to basically cold call/email rescues/facilities outside of Texas. We've partnered with one group so far but haven't gone a transport yet. We are still in the early stages of networking and hope all of this will pay off when the right person sees it and agrees to work with us.

    Good luck <3

Hi! I'm the kennel manager for Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue out of MA and we are always looking for new partners to help out! We are a smaller rescue and while breed specific, there are a few acceptations to that. If you'd like to reach out and see if maybe we could help on occasion please feel free to email me kennel@ygrr.org

Not sure if it's still functional, but there used to be a site called "Doobert" where you could access a network.  I haven't used it in several years so I have no idea if it's still around or if it's current.  My guess is that it will be difficult to find transfer partners at this point because so many of the shelters in the NE that we all depended on being able to receive have found themselves now with their own source of animals locally. I agree with Angellee, we all feel your pain.  Most of our local shelter folks are all in your same boat... searching for solutions and many of our tried and true options have dried up.  I know this wasn't helpful, but you are NOT alone!

I have also been looking into ways to build a transfer network that makes sense.  There may be shelters or rescues that do a great job with a particular kind of dog and its specific needs, or perhaps the local community trends toward a certain kind of dog.  Length of stay for dogs here is long with the tougher breeds, but old calm dogs, and small dogs are popular in our region. Go figure.
I've had conversations with the ASPCA and other national orgs about this very topic.  I will say, at least in my area, there are a lot of "pop up" rescues who do frequest transports to the northeast, often puppies, and we (the local shelter) end up with those puppies or dogs once health or behavioral issues arise. We end up being the dumping ground. Some of these pop-ups, no matter how well intentioned, make it worse for the shelters TBH. I wish shelters and rescues could work together instead of against one another on this issue.  Having a logical and collaborative transfer network is critical in reducing length of stay and encouraging positive outcomes.

Hey Shannon-I see someone suggested using Doobert. I just wanted to let you know that Shelterluv has an integration with Doobert, so you can try using that if you haven't yet!

    Hi Heather,

If an animal is on doobert, and we choose to transfer that animal in, can we import the profile to shelterluv? is the integration both ways? right now we work with some foster based agencies and have to reenter all the medical into shelterluv

Hi Heather.  ShelterLuv, like other Rescue Management Systems, doesn't let you import data from Doobert into SL.  But you can use an extract from SL (transfer list) to import into Doobert to create Animal Profiles connected to a case (their Case Management module).  There is a straight integration between SL and Doobert (pulls the data directly from SL into Doobert) but ShelterLuv made changes to their system and didn't update their integration mapping (this happens a lot with software systems when it's not deemed as an important integration feature).  You can check with Doobert on the status of this integration and they have videos on their system that show how the SL extract file can be uploaded to Doobert. Note - that option requires that you have more than the free version.

Not really a solution for you, just commiseration.  We are small and located in north Texas and very well versed in transport.  We are fortunate to be an original source shelter for the ASPCA but for quite a long time now they've only been able to take a handful of our dogs at one time, mostly puppies and small dogs (the very ones we can usually adopt out), but we are grateful for them taking anything from us.  We also have our own transport van and a relationship with Dog is My Copilot but other than the ASPCA, our transport program is on hiatus until we can restore/build relationships with out-of-state organizations.  In an effort to make new contacts, we've mined other databases such as Petfinder and reached out (cold calling via email) to LOTS of other groups in other states.  It is very laborious by the time we research their programs (websites, Facebook pages) as we all know there are some sketchy groups out there, so we are cautious about who we contact.  Most don't bother to respond.  The few that have responded have let us know they cannot take anything now but may possibly in the future, or they can only take a handful or less of dogs (usually smalls or puppies).  We can't afford to send our van very far for a handful of dogs even with volunteer drivers.  The only way using our van or the airplane can work for us is if we can cobble together a route of several destinations willing to take dogs.  We used to be able to help some of the other rescues in our area by including their dogs in our transports, but everything is stalled at the moment, so everyone is feeling the pain of overcrowding.  We will keep trying.  In the meantime, we are working on ways to help people keep their pets by offering our community food pantry, offering free group training classes, and a few of our volunteers are spending additional time working with our dog population on basic training to make them more likely to be adopted.
