I've had experience implementing Slack messaging for communication with operations teams and it worked pretty well. There's a lot you can do with the free version, and I believe the extended version is not expensive but I don't remember details. One of the best features is that you can create groups so we used it for departmental communication, committee work, special projects, etc. It's also a fun space for team building and engagement if you create themed threads! One example that was by far a staff favorite was "Mortified Monday" where managers posted embarrassing photos of themselves as kids/teens.
