This is a subject that has perplexed me for some time. If you get a car,do you expect to get everything that is needed for that vehicle for free? Gas,repairs maintenance so that you can have a mode of transportation.  If the answer is no,then why do we as an animal welfare society set up that same scenario for pet ownership?

Our organization offers pet supportive services, but  we ask  the pet owners to have some "skin in the game" so to speak, whether it volunteering, or a small donation. Granted, every distressed pet owners situation is different.  Loss of housing/employment,domestic violence, etc may cause a stressful scenario  for their family furkids included. But, planting a seed of " when you get back on your feet, please considering donating some of your time so that this support system can continue. " doesn't hurt. Getting volunteers to help our good cause is a struggle. Suggesting help from those we help should not be out of bounds.

It can creates a win-win situation for pet parents. They received help, and are able to give help to someone that we as an animal welfare society msy mot be able to reach. I believe that there is goodness in the hearts of those who have the least. We should not rob them of the opportunity to validate that goodness.
