  • 1.  Tips on Getting a Donated Car?

    Posted 07-10-2025 08:55 AM

10 Lives Rescue NY Inc needs a car - does anyone have any tips or suggestions as to where we could get that kind of donation? This car would be absolutely vital to our continued success. We are located and focused in Upper Manhattan, where there are absolutely NO affordable spay/neuter options. The nearest possible location involve crossing literal rivers to get to. In order to be able to help more individuals, we need to a set of wheels - we recently applied for a grant for this but were unsuccessful.. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions/tips/or organizations that would be able to provide this?

    Thank you!

I don't have any answers, but hoping to hear what everyone else says! We sure could use a transport vehicle.

What about the police department impound lot? I have a client in the Bronx precinct, I'd be happy to reach out to see if it could be a possibility.

We are also in need of a van for transporting animals for vet checks, spay, and neuter surgeries.  It is vey "rural" in our area.  Renting a van is expensive all on its own.

Following to see if anyone has any ideas. We are looking for a truck for our farm/exotic animal sanctuary to be able to pick up hay & feed,  pull a horse trailer, transport dog/cat food for our community pet food bank. We've been using our personal truck to do this since we started our sanctuary in 2017.

    Hi Farrah,

I've also been looking into how to secure a donated truck or transport van for my new wolfdog rescue, so I totally understand the challenge! I've done quite a bit of research, and wanted to share a few things I've found that might be helpful for 10 Lives Rescue too:

    1. CARS (careasy.org)
You can register your nonprofit with CARS, and they'll give you a custom donation link to share with your supporters. People can donate their used vehicles (even old or non-running ones), and CARS handles everything - towing, auction, title transfer, etc. Once the vehicle sells, your nonprofit gets a percentage of the proceeds. It's not a direct way to get a vehicle, but it's a solid passive fundraising option.

    2. Local dealerships
I've heard some rescues have had success reaching out to local car dealerships, especially ones with a passion for animals or community giving. Some might consider donating an older trade-in, offering a vehicle at a discount, or sponsoring a fundraising event in exchange for some publicity. A personalized letter with your nonprofit story and impact can go a long way.

    3. Government surplus auctions
Some government or municipal programs donate surplus vehicles to 501(c)(3) nonprofits, or sell them at highly reduced rates. You might check if your city or state has a public surplus portal.

    4. Commercial fleet rotation
Companies like FedEx, UPS, or Amazon Delivery Service Partners often rotate their vehicles annually. Some may be open to donating or discounting an older van to a nonprofit - it could be worth sending a thoughtful ask letter to their regional office or partner programs.

Hope that helps! If I come across any other resources, I'll share them your way.

    Warmly,

Just a thought - I don't really know anything except that I have donated cars to my local NPR radio station - they have a link, and it is pretty easy. You'd need to check with someone who knows the laws and regulations on non-profits (assuming you are a 501 (c) 3) if there is a barrier to you doing the same. I would think any non-profit could solicit a donation of a car the same as they do for cash, in-kind, estate, etc. I know I would have happily donated to a rescue around me had I known it was possible. People are just looking for a tax break, and a good cause to pick a place to do this. You'd want to ask for a working vehicle of the type you need, why you need it, and how grateful your rescue would be... and be able to give the donor a tax deduction verification to do it.  Good luck.
