    Hello,

I am curious about how you handle training and mitigation of animal bites to humans in your shelter.

    • What training do you require before a staff, volunteer can handle an animal?
    • Is there a difference on how you handle mitigating bites to staff, volunteers, and the public?
    • I would also like to know about post bite investigations.
    • Do you also review the animal's behaviors, investigate FAS levels and factors?

    Hey!

Looks like this is a couple months old but it came up in my searches so here's what I've got:

All staff and volunteers are required to complete Fear Free Shelters and a handling 101 course taught by the behavior department. Staff participates in defensive handling training as well.

We treat human safety the same across the board whether staff or volunteers or public, however, obviously dogs with specific safety concerns are handled by staff only and they may be limited even further to "senior staff" or "supervisors" which would also include behavior team staff.

We have an incident report that is filled out for anything that poses a safety concern which obviously includes bites but also precursors to biting, growling/snarling/snapping being the most obvious things that would lead to this form being completed. This form allows us to generate the narrative for insurance claims if appropriate as well as gather the most pertinent details directly and timely.

In addition to this we have (Thanks Dr Segurson) QR codes on each kennel that lead to a 2 question survey (name and FAS score) for all volunteers and staff to submit FAS data throughout the day. I am currently working on a way to better collect arousal level data that doesn't fall under FAS scoring.

    Hope this helps some!

Just curious...we are a small rural shelter in SW Georgia.  We had everyone complete Fear Free training as well.  We aren't big enough for a "behavioral department" here.  Is there any other training we can do?  We have a fairly new staff (had to clean house!) who are great but comparatively inexperienced in some areas.  Looking for online training maybe?

There are actually quite a few free resources right here on the Maddie's forum. (Menu bar at the top > Resources > Resource Library)

I would also suggest reaching out to local trainers and actively recruit them as volunteers - many of us love to work with shelter dogs!

Depending on your budget there are other resources as well ranging from free to $$$.

Dog Aggression Training On-Demand | Expand Your Knowledge has a number of great topics covered, I would look at Treat and Retreat and Learning the Ropes as good starting points in there.

Defensive Handling with Aggressive Dogs | The IAABC Foundation

Canine Body Language | The IAABC Foundation

Building Confidence in Rescue Dogs | The IAABC Foundation

And really anything you find in IAABC Foundation's list will be helpful. Those are all really cheap or free options for good foundational information.  It has been my experience that a good number of presenters and trainers (even the big names) are happy to work with shelters and rescues on offerings in ways that make things doable on almost any budget.

If you have specific areas that you feel need to be firmed up let me know and I'll see if I have a specific recommendations.

We have new kennel staff watch this 3-part free webinar from ASPCApro: https://www.aspcapro.org/training/webinar/speaking-dog-canine-communication-1-3 It covers both body language and some basic defensive handling strategies. We also use the first two parts in our volunteer training for folks who are doing additional training to work with more challenging dogs. (The third part doesn't line up very well with the equipment and housing our volunteers are working in, so we make that one optional.)

One reason we chose these is that they are available to anyone with the link, and don't require that a new staff member make an account, etc. It's very low-barrier and easy for them to do during their first day.
