Hello I adopted a sweet 5 year old yorkie about 3 months ago. She has had 2 UTI since I have brought her home. I am a first time dog owner. Is this something that is common with dogs who has been spayed. Is there a treatment that I can do at home or  will a change in her diet help. These vet Bill's are getting to expensive just for them to tell me what I told them the problem was.  Anyones help will be greatly appreciated. As a women I know how awful and painful UTI can be so I dont want her to suffer but I can afford to keep paying 170.00 for vet visits just for them to say she has another UTI. PLEASE HELP!!!!

I wouldn't say that it is common for spayed dogs to have UTI's. Did she have issues with UTI's in her previous home that you are aware of? I had a dog who had constant UTI issues as a younger dog and it was because of her anatomy (she was a french bulldog).  My veterinarian would do a culture and sensitivity on her urine samples so we could target which bacteria were causing her problems and treat with the appropriate antibiotic. Why spend the money on the wrong medication? We would also do a cystocentesis to make sure we were getting a sterile sample (versus a free catch which can become contaminated)

I also added a water fountain and changed other bowls of water frequently so it was fresh- let's face it, my cats did not want to go near a water bowl after she had been drinking from it. I also made it a point to wipe her lady bits with a warm wash cloth since she couldn't reach her parts. Ultimately, my vet and I did chose to have corrective surgery to remove excess skin from her vulva and that solved it.

If you haven't already, ask your vet about a prescription diet if that would helpful for her

    Good luck!

Has she had an ultrasound to accompany any urine samples tested at your vets? I fostered a female 4 year old pup years ago that came to me with very bad UTI. First two rounds of meds did not clear it up. They did an ultrasound and by viewing the bladder could tell she the lining of her bladder was very inflamed. Plus they did a special urine test that had to be sent away for results to identify the specific bacterias at play. They changed to a stronger med  It took almost 3 months of medication to clear it all up once and for all. But it finally did!

Please check with your vet before administering a dog urinary tract infection treatment. Add one teaspoon (for small dogs) or 1-2 tablespoons (for big dogs) of apple cider vinegar to your dog's water bowl. Repeat up to two times per day for up to seven to ten days, depending on how severe the UTI is.

You need to research the benefits of Colloidal Silver. I had a dog that was paralyzed and would develop UTI's if I did not give her a dose of

    Colloidal Silver daily.

I too, am an absolute advocate for holistic solutions AND I never  state what I use without having an allopathic dctor check the pet first, so YOU know what is wrong and how severe..  One may not have time to give holistic solutins whcih ooften take time and do better with proactive work.  I am an absolute user of Colloidal silver! - I had one dog who had gotten her neck ripped up so bad that my vet said he had never seen one like that live.  So I used the silver on her skin to make sure the stiches did not get infected, and mixed in her drinking water.  I also used Turmeric circumin to help build her immune system and help with pain rather then antibiotics.

For urinary tract infections in dogs, home treatment can include increasing water intake to flush bacteria, adding cranberry extract to their diet (though consult a vet first), and maintaining hygiene by frequently cleaning their genital area. Encourage frequent urination to help expel bacteria. However, always consult a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment, as untreated UTIs can lead to serious complications in dogs.

I'm a vet and while to this day the ultimate benefits of cranberry juice are up in the air, there is some evidence that it can help with certain cases of urinary tract infection.  Probably the most common urinary tract infection-causing bacteria is E. coli.  E. coli has octopus-like "tentacles" called "fimbria" which can help the organism attach itself to the walls of the bladder.  Somehow, cranberry juice can inhibit the ability of the bacteria to stick to those walls.  The exact amount of cranberry juice which is required to accomplish this is unknown, and some researchers feel you have to use a good bit of it for it to possibly work.  Cranberry juice may be effective in combating some other bacteria as well.  Of course, without culture and sensitivity you will not know what bacterium or bacteria are afflicting your dog.  Its not a bad idea to perform a culture and sensitivity test, but, understandably, that is not always financially feasible.

I have a cat who is paralyzed and incontinent, so she tends to get UTIs.  UroMaxx (supplement with cranberry extract) supplement and Visbiome probiotics were recommended by others, and I feel like both have been helpful to her (helping to prevent UTIs, not curing them).
