  • 1.  Using PetPoint to track and manage foster animals

    Posted 04-08-2025 05:29 AM

    Hi everyone,

I manage a foster program that fosters out just under 2,000 animals a year. Our shelter uses Petpoint. We have struggled to find the best practices for using petpoint for the foster program and often have a lot of user error due to how particular petpoint can be with certain processes.

I would love the opportunity to connect with another shelter that has a similar size foster program or larger and uses petpoint. I am curious to know how others are using petpoint for their foster program to see if there are better ways of doing things.

Would someone be willing to reach out to me to discuss? I can be reached at lkniffen@michiganhumane.org

    Thank you in advance!

We used to use Pet Point for our Fosters and for tracking our animals in general. We switched to ShelterLuv 6 years ago and it's much better!

    Hi Elsa,

Thank you for sharing that. Would you be able to point out any processes or features that you found were improved by switching to shelterluv? I am curious to know what issues/difficulties your organization had with petpoint as well.

    Thanks again!

I personally feel that there are just a lot less steps and it's much more intuitive on ShelterLuv. I do know that ShelterLuv offers ways for you to email with your fosters directly through the platform with vaccine alerts and such.

    Hi,

We use Pet point for foster but have a much smaller number that go into foster. I am interested in following this string to see what others do. I have been interested in the scheduled calendar as an option. We currently track appointments in our outlook calendar.

We use petpoint as far as putting them in location and sublocation of foster, but we don't use the foster module. I have watched the how to videos for using the foster module however with me as the only person on the foster "team", it is far too many extra steps to worry about.

    Hi Erin,

Thanks for sharing! What do you use to keep track of which foster homes the animals are in?

Hi Laura, we only have about 54 foster homes, so I just keep a spreadsheet with the names of fosters and which animals they have, when they are 4 weeks of age, 8 weeks of age, and when they are scheduled to come in. It is easier for me that way since we have a smaller foster base. I have attached a partial screenshot of my spreadsheet.  We sent out about 400 animals to foster last year so I realize that this probably isn't ideal for a larger foster base.
