  • 1.  What do you call "shelter intervention"?

    Posted 06-06-2025 08:43 PM

I'm starting a communications and education campaign for our organization and would like some feed back on the language used to describe the work we do. We help families keep their pets with a variety of support and thereby prevent those pets from ending up in the shelters. I'm wondering if other organizations doing the same type of work call it shelter intervention or something else. What have you heard it called?

I do use the term shelter intervention when discussing our work in human-animal wellbeing focused on supporting the human-animal bond, keeping families together, and avoiding unnecessary institutionalization. By supporting pets staying with their families, we can devote more time and resources to the admitted animals that do need shelter intervention.

We like to use the terminology '"shelter diversion" and  provide metrics showing the number of animals we have diverted from entering the shelter as a result of our assistance

We also use the term "Diversion" when referring to offering services to directly prevent surrender, but we also have a department that is dedicated to our community programming. It is called the "Community Solutions Department". Our "diversion" team which is located in the same lobby where surrenders occur is called the Community Sheltering Center.

I love 'community solutions' as opposed to shelter diversion or intake prevention! We are working through our 'identity' and 'branding' right now and haven't quite landed on a single direction. I like how solutions is positive whereas diversion or intake prevention have a more reactive connotation. So far, our tagline is: People, helping animals, helping people. But, as far as a categorization, most organizations would label us as intake prevention.

Yeah, I have a feeling that is why the founder of this department settled on that name.  I love your tagline! Are you concerned about organizations not knowing how to label your programming if the name isn't "clear" to them?

Hi Elsa, I thought I had replied to this, but I guess not! I'm hopeful that the logo, plus the name: PALS of PAWS in Saginaw County, plus the tagline will be enough that folks understand the foundation of keeping the human/animal bond intact, but we will find out how many questions come through that are 'so what do you do exactly?' :)

Also, I was in a seminar yesterday on chat gpt and business and it gave me a good idea to run some questions through there to help with the communications, especially because it can help to be geography specific. I will let you know if that gives me any additional insight or help!
