  • 1.  What do you do about cats spraying in a shelter environment?

    In our rescue we have an issue with some of the cats spraying. We understand this is a territorial and stress behavior but it creates issues and a lot of extra cleaning. We have a general population that are "free range" inside the rescue once they've all been fully vetted and passed their quarantine period and this is of course where we have the most issues. We believe the cats are happier and healthier when they get to roam and be together as opposed to being in cages, but we would love to get the spraying under control. We're open to any suggestions that might help.

    Are they all fixed? Have you tried persons sprays? How many cats are in 1 room? Is it possibly to many.? Do you have a lot of high shelves for them to escape? Are there certain ones doing it bc they may be stressed. Have you used something like nature's miracle to keep them from spraying in the same area again? 

    There are so many variables.  I'm sorry but without knowing these things it's hard to answer but these are things to consider.

    If you can pinpoint the culprit(s), those are the ones I'd lock up. Usually when we have cats that are urinating inappropriately, it's only 1-2 and the issue stops once they are kenneled. They just don't handle the stress of the community room well. We had two females that would pee all over the place. Once we kenneled them, the rooms stayed clean and they seem much more content. Stress pee in a shelter environment rarely stops even with pheromones or deep cleaning in my experience.
